Hamilton may think twice before passing

Lewis Hamilton says he will "think twice" before trying to overtake in tomorrow's European Grand Prix, despite vowing not to be less aggressive. The McLaren driver has been involved in incidents with other drivers in the last two races in Monaco and Canada, crashing with team-mate Jenson Button during the Montreal race. Speaking after qualifying in Valencia on Saturday, Hamilton said he is not planning to be less aggressive, but he did admit he may think more carefully before trying to pass.

Porsche back at Le Mans with new LMP1

Porsche will return to the Le Mans 24 Hours with a full factory LMP1 prototype in 2014, the Stuttgart-based sportscar manufacturer has announced. As the event's most successful manufacturer, the company has not been represented in a works capacity in the top class at Le Mans since 1998 when Porsche claimed the last of its 16 outright victories with Allan McNish, Stephane Ortelli and Laurent Aiello in the 911 GT1. Matt Brown snaps losing skid with decision over John Howard

PITTSBURGH -- Before their bout, John Howard predicted that he and Matt Brown would get the Fight of the Night bonus, but that seems unlikely after their fight on Sunday night. Brown won the grappling-filled bout 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

Howard used lots of snapping leg kicks to start the round, until they moved into the clinch. Howard swung the fight to the ground for a second, but they returned to their feet quickly, where Brown made headway with striking. He hit Brown with a kick and two strikes before Howard took Brown down. They stood back up, and Brown continued to show impressive striking, until Howard threw Brown down on his back.

Brown's legs were reddened by the second round from Howard's leg kicks, a weapon Howard continued to use. The fight oddly went to the ground about halfway through the round, as Howard tried for a takedown and ended up on his back. Brown joined him there for a grappling session to finish out the round.

Again, Howard used the leg kick to start the third round, but then tried for higher kicks after that. To stop the onslaught of kicks, Brown got a takedown, but he let Howard reverse his position and take Brown's back.

Brown finally got loose and tried to work his stand-up game, but it didn't work, as Howard got another takedown. Brown finished the round with as much ground and pound as he could.

"I feel amazing on the win. My team really keeps me on my game, especially mentally. I've got the skills, but now I'm fighting smarter," Brown said. "I think this may have been my smartest fight. But I still have a lot of work to do on my wrestling and grappling. I loved fighting here. I always fight better around my home. Always have, always will. I wanted a win, even if it meant a decision."

This win straps a losing skid for Brown, who had three losses in a row. Howard is now the one with the three-fight losing streak. He has recent losses to Thiago Alves, Jake Ellenberger and now Brown.

UFC on Versus 4 analysis: Stevenson and Griffin go small, will it work?

Joe Stevenson and Tyson Griffin are playing what could be their final cards. Once upon a time, they were both title contenders at lightweight in the UFC. With bigger and more well-rounded fighters coming from all over the world feeding the division in 2011, both fighters have fallen on hard times. Stevenson's lost three straight and 5-of-7 while Griffin has dropped three in a row. They both make their featherweight debut on Sunday at UFC on Versus 4.

Surprisingly, both UFC vets are big favorites. Stevenson (31-13, 8-7 UFC) is minus-270 in some spots against Javier Vasquez. Griffin (14-5, 7-5 UFC) is minus-180 over Manny Gamburyan. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole checked in with us and didn't sound super confident that either fighter would roll to a victory.

Cormier takes next step by picking apart Monson

Daniel Cormier is taking baby steps working his way towards being legitimate heavyweight contender and he's passing each test with flying colors. Tonight, he avoided the clutches of submission artist Jeff Monson and lit up the veteran with a variety of punches and kicks. Cormier cruised to the eighth victory of his young career with a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all cards.

Cormier's arsenal of left hooks, right hand leads and powerful clinch work tired the 40-year-old. He outlanded Monson 120-40. His combinations confused and startled the former UFC title contender. Cormier also made good on 37-of-47 kicks.

By the end of the fight, Monson's face was all marked up and he suffered a cut on the top of his head.

Training Notes: McDonald joins United

McDONALD JOINS UNITED

Newly acquired defender Brandon McDonald arrived in Washington early Tuesday morning fresh off a plane from San Francisco. Showing little jetlag, McDonald made it to training in order to get to know his new teammates on and off the field.

"I got off the plane this morning around 2:00 a.m.," McDonald said after training. "It was good to get the flight out of the way and come in and kick around with the guys - to get started in being part of the team."

Carano MIA and ‘Cyborg’ unsigned, how much longer will Zuffa-run Strikeforce stick with female fighting?

It's not looking good for female fighters with the biggest promotions. This week's Strikeforce Challengers card in Washington and next month's Strikeforce cards in Las Vegas and Chicago feature some female fights. After that, who knows?

The two biggest female names under the Strikeforce banner still don't have fights scheduled.

We're now a few weeks removed from Gina Carano bailing on her Strikeforce: Dallas fight and there's still official no word on what the injury was, or a timetable for her return. When Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker spoke with AOL, he still had no answers.

"Gina is feeling much better after having undergone some medical attention and is looking forward to getting back into training very soon. She would like to express thanks to Team Jackson for a wonderful training camp, Strikeforce and the fans," said Coker, reading from a text message he received from Carano's management team.

Beyond that the boss didn't have any details.

"She evidently had some medical attention provided and she looks forward to getting back soon. So that's everything I know," said Carano.

Coker couldn't even answer if the medical issue was career threatening, saying the text was all he's seen.

The situation with Strikeforce's No. 1 female star is just as unclear, or is it?

Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is currently without a contract.

"Absolutely. I'm pretty sad not to be fighting and I'm trying to renegotiate my contract for a year, but Strikeforce doesn't want to made a deal, they want to keep paying me what they paid before, but now I'm the event's champion and I've never been defeated in Strikeforce. I just wanted to be recognized," Cyborg said.

She also told Tatame that she has taken an August fight in Brazil and just has to wait until her Strikeforce contract runs out this month.

One has to wonder if this is the end of the line for Cyborg in Strikeforce. If Dana White has zero interest in female fighting in the UFC, why would he allow a company that he owns to lock itself into any more long-term contracts with female fighters?

The United States is the only major automobile market that sets crash standards for unbelted occupants. Report: Volkswagen unlikely to return to Dakar

Volkswagen Race Touareg 3

Everything has its cost. And in the case of Volkswagen's new WRC effort, that cost appears to be Dakar.

The German automaker has dominated the famous rally raid for the last three years, but if the latest reports come to pass, VW could be preparing to retire the Race Touareg. Volkswagen, it seems, has nothing left to prove out there on the dunes, and with its focus shifted on the World Rally Championship, a return to Dakar doesn't look to be in the cards.

The news will undoubtably be welcomed by X-Raid, the team operated by Sven Quandt (of the Quandt family that owns BMW) which has campaigned off-road Bimmers and Minis at Dakar for the past several years, and which has come closest to defeating Volkswagen. The team will reportedly be returning to the South American event next year with four of its specially-built Mini Countrymen, and with Volkswagen out of the way, this team looks poised to finally claim the trophy.

Carwin took a beating, doesn’t remember much of UFC 131

Shane Carwin confirmed what most us already knew. In a one-sided beatdown, he ate a lot of punches from Junior dos Santos at UFC 131.The scary part is Carwin says he doesn't recall parts of the fight.

"I have had a lot of time to reflect on the fight, and while I have not seen it and due to the damage I incurred, I can't recall much of the fight. What I do know is this I am a guy learning how to fight at the elite level," Carwin wrote on his blog. "My heart can't be questioned, I think I showed that I have the cardio to fight at this level and I just need to work on my technique."

Carwin said he knew he was in trouble early in the fight.

"As the fight started, I just did not feel like myself," Carwin said. "I wasn't able to get my feet moving and Junior capitalized quickly. As he was pummeling me I kept trying to find a way to defend myself so [referee Herb Dean] would not stop the fight. Junior was landing solid shots and that is where probably he broke my nose."

Carwin did all he could to make it through the final round and take the fight to a decision.

"After the second round I knew I was in trouble. My nose made it impossible to breathe, my eyes were full of blood and Junior was still coming at me."

Charlie Brenneman: 'It Was Quite a Rollercoaster'

Within a span of five days, Charlie Brenneman experienced the self-described feeling of devastation upon learning of his preliminary fight cancellation to the joy of beating a top 10 welterweight in his live television debut.

On an appearance Monday on MMAFighting.com's The MMA Hour, Brenneman detailed this past weekend's UFC on Versus 4 "rollercoaster" ride in Pittsburgh, one that should limit the teasing from fans for his lower standing within the UFC.

"I can proudly say, after this weekend, [Dana White] knows who I am," Brenneman said.

Last Wednesday, Brenneman received the unfortunate news of his scheduled opponent T.J. Grant suffering a case of mono that put their welterweight bout on the shelf. But for some reason, Brenneman was told by matchmaker Joe Silva to stay on weight to earn his show money. Looking back, Brenneman says he doesn't know if he was positioned then as a potential reserve.

"I thought [Silva] was making me do it to do it," Brenneman said. "... I was grumpy. I was very upset with the situation."

Following orders, Brenneman continued to cut weight and even doing so in proximity with the fighter he would end up replacing, Nate Marquardt.

By Friday, Brenneman was informed of the possibility he would fight Rick Story and by then Brenneman said he was able to stay level-headed after having already gone through tremendous stress.

"I had high highs and low-lows in the last 48 hours," Brenneman recalled. "I wouldn't have been surprised by anything."

Brenneman was not without possessing a hint of anxiety, however, having to repeatedly ask his team if the fight with Story would actually happen. Still, Brenneman was aware harassing the UFC with questions wasn't going to help.

So he waited.

Then on around 3:15 to 3:20 p.m. the day of the weigh-ins Saturday, Brenneman received the official green light. At that point, Brenneman's name still wasn't on the call sheet to show up for the weigh-ins and had to speak with UFC coordinator Burt Watson to find out which bus to take in order to attend the weigh-ins.

It was an opportunity of a lifetime for Brenneman. But on the other side, he was stepping into a spot taken away from someone else. Brenneman and his camp did their best to be respectful when approaching Marquardt and Brenneman initially wanted to offer his sympathy, eventually holding back.

"I didn't know if he wanted anything to do with me," Brenneman said. "I felt for him."

Brenneman was a huge underdog heading into the fight against Story, but after three rounds, his wrestling prowess became the factor on the scorecards. On scores of 29-28 three times, Brenneman earned the biggest win in his career in front of a supportive hometown crowd.

And from that point on, not only is White well aware of who Brenneman is, Brenneman might become a regular on the "main cards."

"Hopefully my next fight you're going to see me at this time on this channel," Brenneman said.

UFC on Versus 4 weigh-in: Fighters dropping down all look good

The scale doesn't lie, so often times how you look on weigh-in day can be a huge indicator of how fight night will go down. Five fighters on the UFC on Versus 4 card are dropping down to a new weight class and they all looked healthy on the scale in Pittsburgh. A sixth was expected to weigh-in, but Nate Marquardt was dumped from the card for failing his medicals and subsequently fired from the promotion.

Two former UFC lightweight contenders were really worth monitoring on the scale (full weigh-in video).

Both Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson, dropping 10 pounds to 145, looked good. Neither looked drawn in the face or sickly from a physique standpoint. Stevenson simply lost some mass on his upper body and Griffin was shredded around the waist. Rich Attonito, coming down from middleweight, looked good as well at welterweight. And featherweight absolutely looked like the correct move for Ricardo Lamas and Matt Grice.

The heavyweight staredowns were intense. Matt Mitrione had words for Christian Morecraft, who actually appeared a little thrown off by the exchange.

Cheick Kongo got right in the grill of Pat Barry. The Kongo-Barry fight is now the main event. Charlie Brenneman stepped up to fight Rick Story, the original opponent of Nate Marquardt. Brenneman and TUF 12 runner-up Michael Johnson both played to the Pittsburgh crowd. Brenneman wore a Steelers' hard hat and Johnson weigh-in with a "Terrible Towel" on his head.

1976 Olympian Davis not impressed by dos Santos’ boxing

The early line is out for the proposed Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos heavyweight title fight. Velasquez is a solid favorite at minus-150 which surprises because we keep hearing that JDS has the best boxing in the heavyweight divisiion.

Howard Davis Jr., a 1976 Olympic Gold medalist, isn't one of those viewers impressed with the Brazilian's boxing.

"If you compare it to boxing it wasn't that good. It was okay for MMA," Davis told Alex Donno from 790 the Ticket in Miami. "If he was a pure boxer, he would've knocked him out a long time ago. He just seemed cautious and scared. He didnt throw enough jabs. He should've put him away."

Davis doesn't believe JDS showed enough killer instinct.

"If Chuck Liddell [in his prime] was a heavyweight fighting one of these guys, especially Shane carwin, he would've knocked him out," said Davis. "Chuck was a fast starter. He didn't play. He tried to put you away. These guys are just too tentative too me."

Davis also pointed out that Liddell was wise in allowing injured fighters to get back to their feet, where he would try to inflict more damage.

Bonuses, professionals and more UFC on Versus 4 notes

PITTSBURGH -- In the aftermath of the UFC on Versus 4 bouts, bonuses were given out and fighters talked about their nights.

-- $50,000 bonuses were awarded to Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz for Fight of the Night, Joe Lauzon for Submission of the Night, and Knockout of the Night to Cheick Kongo.

-- Brenneman, who had his original fight with T.J. Grant canceled, then stepped in at the last minute for Nate Marquardt, called the week surreal. He also said that he made weight so that he could get his show money. The waiting on if he would fight or not was hard, but he stayed calm about it.

"What can I do but sit there and wait for it to happen and be a professional?"

-- Rick Story was put in an odd position as his opponent changed. "I was prepared to fight a kickboxer with jiu-jitsu, not a shorter attacking wrestler. He got the better of me this time."

-- The attendance for the event was 7,792, and UFC president Dana White said that the UFC's first trip into Pittsburgh, "Didn't suck."

-- Matt Mitrione worked at Xtreme Couture with kickboxer Ray Sefo before this bout, particularly on the combination he used to knock Christian Morecraft out. He said the moment was just right to use the combination.

"I thought, what the hell, I might as well try it."

-- In Pat Barry's loss to Cheick Kongo, he came close to finishing off the man who eventually beat him. It appeared that referee Dan Miragliotta was going to stop the fight. Barry said that he did, for a split-second, think that the bout was going to be stopped, but that didn't stop him from attacking Kongo.

Silva calls for first round KO, Leben admits he’s a ‘little scared’

Who's looking for some fine grappling when Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva lock horns? That's what I thought. Two of the most prolific bangers in the history of MMA should provide some fireworks next week at UFC 132.

Silva has 23 knockouts in 33 wins while Leben has 13 in 25 victories. Silva says he's on another level.

"I'm faster than him. Who's gonna hit first? I don't see him going past the first round," said Silva (0:38 mark). "I'm going to hit him a couple of times and after that, he's going to go out."

This is a huge fight for Leben (25-7, 11-6 UFC), who allowed Brian Stann to use him as a stepping stone at UFC 125.

"I've had a lot of fights and I should have known better but I think I just got a little comfortable. I was feeling really good after my three fight win streak. I was feeling good and I underestimated Brian Stann a little bit," Leben said during the UFC 132 teleconference.
"I think the biggest thing that got affected actually was my diet. I came in just a little bit too heavy, and I cut too much weight."

Leben's not making the same mistake against the legendary Silva. He actually said Silva's game scares him a bit.

"This time, I'll be honest, I'm excited to fight Wanderlei. And a little scared at the same time too," Leben said. "I think for me that's definitely a very motivating and driving emotion. I'm really focusing a lot harder on my diet, and when I'm in the gym, I'm in the gym 110 percent. I'm listening to my coaches and I'm putting everything in because I want to go out and I want to win this fight."

It's also a huge fight for Silva, who at 34, appears to be on the downside. He dropped to middleweight to make a run at Anderson Silva's title and hasn't been able to remain healthy. He beat Michael Bisping in his official 185-pound debut, but hasn't fought since in 16 months.

Vancouver Athletic Commission speaks on Elkins/Omigawa decision

At UFC 131, judges' decisions caused consternation in the MMA world, from the UFC president on down. The 30-27 cards in Kenny Florian and Mark Munoz's wins were confusing enough, but the decision that was truly confounding was Darren Elkins' win over Michihiro Omigawa.

Dana White responded by paying Omigawa his win bonus and treating the fight like a win for the Japanese fighter.

"We're going to pay [Omigawa] his win money," White said. "I don't care what the judge says, he won the fight. … I say he won. Overruled."

But now the Vancouver Athletic Commission is speaking out about judging in the Elkins-Omigawa bout to point out that Elkins could have reasonably taken the fight. In a statement to SB Nation, the commission's executive director explains:

"In the first round, Elkins backed Omigawa up with punches the entire round. He controlled the center of the cage. He was throwing a lot more shots, and landing more -- and in combination. If there is any controversy as to the outcome of the fight it must be because of the second round. That was a very challenging round to score. An argument can be made in favour of either fighter. Elkins landed more punches. At one point, when Omigawa came forward, he was stopped dead in his tracks by Elkins' combination punches, and at another point he was slightly buckled. Due to Omigawa's unusual stance and balance, it was difficult to tell exactly whether he was rocked by some of these shots. However, you could see Omigawa's leg bend, and the control shift to Elkins as he landed the combo, stopping Omigawa in his tracks, taking the center of the cage, and going on the attack again. These sequences, as well as the total effective strikes landed, could reasonably warrant awarding the round to Elkins. Elkins didn't land many more than Omigawa, but he did land more. As to the blood - it represents something, but a cut can be caused by a glancing blow and some fighters just cut more readily than others.

By this description of the fight, it appears that forward movement is the most important thing in scoring a round. Punches landed are a side note. How would they score a fighter like Dominick Cruz, who constantly baits his opponents into coming forward with his non-stop movement? Chan Sung Jung, A.K.A. the Korean Zombie, should try to schedule every fight in Vancouver, as he's known to continually come forward during his bouts.

At UFC 131, the judges had monitors, a new procedure that is expected to become the norm for UFC events. In the past, judges had to rely on watching the live action in the cage -- which could be difficult when the fight hits the ground -- or look at the video boards hanging in the arena. The fact that monitors didn't quell judging controversies frustrated White.

"Something has to be done about the judging," White said. "It has to. It's so bad, and not only does it affect people's lives, it ruins everything for people that are watching. You watch it, and you're like, 'What? What ? 30-27? What are you watching?'

But monitors are a short term solution, when what is needed is more education, training and experience, but that takes time. Meanwhile, high-stakes fights still will come down to the very human judges, and the mistakes and subjectivity that comes part and parcel with their humanity.

Stout scores possible KO of Year on Edwards at UFC 131

Sam Stout loves post-fight bonuses. Outside of Chris Lytle, "Hands of Stone" has cashed the most UFC bonuses in history. They usually come via the 15-minute route. Tonight, Stout took a different path by making quick work of Yves Edwards with a vicious knockout in less than four minutes. Stout landed a left hook that knocked Edwards stiff at 3:52 in the first round at UFC 131 in Vancouver.

"I thought it would take a little bit longer to be able to connect against a fighter of Yves Edwards' caliber. I was putting my combinations together and trying to slow him down. We've been working for several months on landing a left hook against a left-handed fighter," Stout said. "Tonight, it landed and it worked. It's an amazing feeling to score a knockout like that in front of the Canadian fans."

It could've very easily been Stout lying on his back. He ate a big right hand over his ear just a split second before his sledgehammer left hand caught Edwards on the chin.

Edwards, a UFC veteran who first fought for the promotion back at UFC 33 in 2001, was out on the way down and then slammed his head on the mat. Edwards' (40-17-1, 8-5 UFC) arms went out to his side and his eyes were wide open. The physicians attended to Edwards for nearly two and a half minutes before he rose to his feet. Once he got back to the locker room, Edwards was able to speak, but was still in shock.

"I've never been knocked out, so this is a tough loss for me. I've got to go back and see the tape to figure out where my defense broke down," Edwards said.

Stout has cashed bonuses on five previous occasions, good for over $200,000. While training for this fight in Las Vegas, the lightweight spoke with RawVegas and defended his go-for-broke style.

It certainly worked tonight. Stout (17-6-1, 6-5 UFC) has won 4-of-5 now in the UFC. At 27 years old, he may be turning the corner.

Recap: U-23's 8 - Fredericksburg Hotspur PDL 1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. ? It was Major League Soccer?s all-time leading scorer Jaime Moreno?s first game at the helm of United?s newly formed Under-23 Academy team. Early on it was easy to see his new club resembled its head man?s game, hustling its way into early scoring chances.

In the first minute, D.C. United forward Marco Mangione deflected a pass in front of the Hotspur goal which forced Fredericksburg Hotspur goalkeeper Ryan Taylor to make a diving save. They threatened again just four minutes later, drawing a penalty kick which was shot wide by midfielder Paul Torres.

Slimmed down Morecraft ready for Mitrione at UFC on Versus 4

PITTSBURGH -- A tiny Christian Morecraft will be in the cage to fight Matt Mitrione on Sunday night. Well, as tiny as you can get at 6-foot-6 and 265+ lbs.

At the UFC on Versus open workouts on Friday, a sleeker Morecraft answered questions about his slimmed-down frame.

"Right now, I'm over 265. I've been doing a lot of strength training. You know all the madness that goes into this. I used to be a 360-lb. man a few years ago. I'm just morphing into this. I'm feeling more powerful and more explosive and just amped."

Morecraft's known more for his ground game, but said that he has focused on his stand-up. That should come in handy against a hard hitter like Mitrione.

"Obviously, in this sport, we work on all different aspects of our game. I've really been working on my striking and counterstriking," Morecraft said. "I was dominating my first fight with Stefan Struve, and my stand-up wasn't as close to what it is now. I couldn't wait to work on that divot in my game. Can't wait to unleash it on Sunday."

In his UFC debut against Struve, Morecraft won the first round before getting knocked out in the second.

Morecraft wants a win to continue to move up in the UFC heavyweight division, continuing, as he put it, "The Live It Love It Tour," but he has a little more motivation to fight Mitrione, a fighter who is known to get under his opponents' skins.

"I've said a lot of stuff like I don't like Matt. Obviously, I respect him. Ever since I saw him on 'The Ultimate Fighter,' I just always wanted to fight him."

He doesn't take Mitrione's trash talk too seriously, though.

"That stuff's always fun. People love it, and it keeps us around. It's almost like adding in a little entertainment into the game."
