Meet the Guy Who Helped Take Down Georgia?s Red-Light Cameras

In 1987, a California cop let a genie out of a bottle by writing 16-year-old Richard Diamonda speeding ticket. Diamond considered unfair the officer?s technique of hiding in a concealed driveway. Years later, Diamond entered politics and from 1997 to 2003 was the spokesman on technology and privacy for former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick [...]

How Couture, Lesnar, Griffin and Henderson helped one student turn his grades around

As the head of the Ohio Athletic Commission since 2004, Bernie Profato has been in close contact with some of MMA's best, and he told Cagewriter that he has always been impressed with the fighters. No episode impressed him more than when three former UFC champs all played a hand in turning his grandson's grades around.

"When Randy [Couture] was in Columbus, my grandson was having some problems in algebra, and he's a big MMA fan. I talked to Randy about it. Later, when he was in town for the WEC, he asked, 'Hey Bernie, how's your grandson?' and when you think about all the people around him, he remembered that. I said, 'Hey, he got that D to a B.' Randy says, 'Let me give him a call.' I gave him my cell phone and he left a message because he was in school.

"That night we were having dinner, and it was Randy, Brock [Lesnar] and Forrest [Griffin], and Randy asks if my grandson got the message. I said yes, and thanked Randy because my grandson really appreciated it. Brock said, 'What's that?' and I said, 'Well, he brought his D to a B.'

"'He didn't get an A?' he said, so I gave the phone to Brock, and he called my grandson and said, 'I'll come and kick your butt if you don't get that grade to an A.' Then Forrest got on the phone and said, 'Listen, Daniel, you're doing a great job, son. Ifthis big guy gives you any more [expletive], me and Couture will kick the hell out of him. One of us can't, but both of us can!'

"Last year, during Strikeforce, Dan Henderson called and talked to him. Do you know what that does for this kid? He went from a D in three subjects to a B+ average. That's because these guys took the time to talk to the kid and say, 'You've got to get to school and learn.'

"Because these guys are educated. You're not dealing with a bunch of dummies. You're dealing with a bunch of guys with college educations. That's what they're telling my grandson. Football is second, but an education is first. When he's hearing it from these guys, he's going out and putting his nose to the grindstone. They turned him around."

Followup: Uncovering more details on BMW's i3 and i8 [w/videos]

BMW i8 Concept

BMW i3 conceptWe've just wrapped up a series of workshops in Germany about all things BMW i, but before we drop our "Behind i" feature on you next week, we wanted to give you a few tasty morsels to chew on while you're pursuing our massive gallery of the all-new i3 and i8 concepts.

If you haven't read our breakdown on both models, check it out now, as it includes the basic specs, powertrain, suspension, chassis and a cursory look at all the techy tidbits behind the i3 and i8. But here's the latest...

The i3 will tip the scales at 2,755 pounds, while the i8 will come in under 3,300 pounds. While that might sound slightly chunky, consider that the average gasoline-powered car converted to EV duty normally tacks on around 500 pounds courtesy of the battery, motor and cooling system. When looked at in this way, both models could be considered rather svelte.

The carbon fiber "Life" structure that envelops the i3's passengers is so strong (yet very light) that BMW's engineers didn't have to include a B-pillar for structural rigidity. That means ingress and egress should be easy, aided by the fact that both models utilize ultra-thin carbon fiber and plastic bits for the interior elements. Click past the jump for a whole mess of videos featuring the new i3 and i8 concepts in more detail.

According to Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Design, those oh-so-low side windows probably won't make it to production, but the design team is intent on bringing as much light into the cabin as possible - particularly on the i8. However, the i3's glass roof will make way for a full carbon fiber piece when production begins next year.

In our previous story, we mentioned that the i3 could be outfitted with an optional range extending engine, and after much poking and prodding, we got an answer on what it is and how it'll work. The engine will be rear-mounted, right against the electric motor (not compromising luggage space), and it will be a two-cylinder gasoline mill with a displacement of around 600cc. Cooling will be provided by the liquid system keeping the battery pack in check, and the i3 will be a true range-extender - no engine torque will reach the wheels mechanically (unlike the Chevrolet Volt). How much of an extension? Double, or around 186 miles.

And as for the i8, this will be the first mid-engine BMW in nearly 30 years, likely to be fitted with a dual-clutch gearbox and some kind of torque vectoring system to put out a combined 402 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels when the turbo'd 1.5-liter three-cylinder and electric motor are working in unison.

Check out a whole slew of videos from BMW after the break.

Report: Audi settles Chrysler Eminem ad infringement argument [w/video]

2012 audi a6 avant commercial screenshot

Audi and Chrysler looked ready to tussle over the German automaker's European commercial for the 2012 Audi A6 Avant. The commercial spot in question had many accusing it of being a bit too close to the Chrysler "Imported from Detroit" campaign that kicked off with Eminem selling the world on Detroit and the automaker's new 200 sedan. What could've been a negative battle has, in fact, become quite a positive for the city of Detroit.

The two automakers won't reveal specific terms of their settlement, but both state that the end result was reached amicably. As a result of their agreement, Audi is going to spend some cash on projects that work directly towards the revitalization of the Motor City.

UFC 135 hype begins with good trash talk between Jones and ?Rampage?

Where's the hook? Some fans may have asked that question when the Jon Jones-Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fight was announced for UFC 135.

After watching today's press conference in Denver, there's certainly some great angles we'll be discussing before the October fight - Old vs. young, washed up vs. overhyped along with who's cockier?

Rampage brought his top notch trash talking skills to Denver. He got off some doozies which included mocking Jones (GIF) for his unorthodox staredown.

Jackson said Jones reminds him of his former reality show adversary Rashad Evans.

"Him and Rashad got something in common. They're both really cocky. I'm confident, very confident in myself. There's a difference. Last time I was this confident, I knocked someone [Chuck Liddell] out in the first round and got that belt," Jackson said during the prefight press conference right outside the Pepsi Center . "I've been working hard, training and doing all the right things, all the stuff I need to be doing. That belt's coming back to me, for real."

Jackson also tried to diminish the Jones' win that got him the UFC light heavyweight title.

"I just have to say, straight up, I respect you dog. I do think you are the future of MMA, straight-up. I'm keeping it real. But you fought [Mauricio] 'Shogun' Rua when he was rusty as hell. He hadn't fought for a year. He had like two knee surgeries."

Jones suggested there will also be excuses from folks after he beats Jackson.

"He didn't fight the PRIDE Rampage, he fought the movie-star Rampage, so there will always be excuses," said Jones.

Then Jackson went on the offensive over being called old by some fans and media.

"I'm only 33. Goodness. You all act like I'm Randy Couture's decrepit old ass, Jackson said. "You know, if I have to represent the old school, I guess I'll represent them. I guess I'm old school, but with old school comes a lot of experience. He's the youngest champion, but I think [Jones is] the least experienced champion in UFC history."

Spy Shots: This is the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota was busy introducing all flavors of the 2012 Toyota Camry to the media earlier this week, but since all that stuff's embargoed, there's not much to tell. Yet. But what isn't under embargo is this collection of spy photos showing the 2012 Camry Hybrid in its birthday suit while shooting a television commercial.

The new Camry's familiar roofline communicates practicality overall, but the updated sheetmetal has more crisp lines, with new fascias fore and aft. The hybrid's grille treatment apes that of the facelifted Highlander Hybrid, and yes, those headlights are indeed the ones Akio Toyoda teased a few weeks ago.

In a nutshell, it's still a conservative look, but decidedly less frumpy than before. Now, let's see what changes Toyota's made below the surface to bring the Camry in line with the current midsize family-sedan competition.

Sebastian Vettel believes his Red Bull Racing team will have to raise its game in order to fight with McLaren and Ferrari during this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. ?Cro Cop? returns for another UFC fight against Roy Nelson

Dana White is trying to allow the legends of MMA to walk away gracefully, but some won't cooperate. After UFC 132, White said "I think that's it." We're still waiting on an answer from Silva. He did the same after UFC 128 with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, but it looks like the former PRIDE star wants to continue to eran a few bucks.

Cro Cop wants to fight on and is owed another bout on his contract. So coming off an ugly third round knockout loss to Brendan Schaub, Cro Cop announced he'll be facing Roy Nelson at UFC 137 in October.

"I've had no contact with Dana White and have not re-negotiated with the UFC. I agreed to my next fight and that's it," Filipovic explained. "I can now exclusively confirm that I will fight my last UFC fight October 29 in Las Vegas against Roy Nelson."

Cro Cop, 36, has been battling a nasty knee injury over the last few years, but says he's good to go now.

"We will see in the next fight. I am happy that I managed to rehabilitate my injury. I received a few injections to the knee. It is an unpleasant procedure. They take your blood and separate parts of it using a a centrifuge andthen inject [the plasma rich platelets] into the knee to stimulate cartilage regeneration," Cro Cop said. "This knee was destroyed, but I managed to repair it. I felt terrible pain, and now twice a week I'm doing exercises with physiotherapy. "

Cage Potato calls this a win or go home fight for both fighters. Do you agree? Nelson's lost two straight, but against Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.

Video you need to see: Jose Aldo on the best slip and slide ever

Fair readers, sometimes we come across MMA videos that we don't understand. Videos that are in Portuguese, but soundtracked by a terrible song in English with nonsensical lyrics. Videos that involve women in bikinis and men in boardshorts cheering on the UFC featherweight champ.

But if we have one rule at Cagewriter, it's that when we see a video of Jose Aldo jumping in a giant slip and slide, we share it.

According to the video's title, he beat Demian Maia in drowning the goose. His next opponent is Kenny Florian. The two will face each other in the co-main event at UFC 136 in Houston. Hopefully, they will both incorporate slip and slides into their training.

Thanks to MMA Mania.

Video: Kia driver caught motoring down the highway with hood up

Driver with hood up

There's the right way to handle a highway emergency and the wrong way. Driving down the interstate with your hood peeled back onto your windshield certainly falls into the latter category, and yet, the driver in the video after the jump managed to do just that down a few miles of New Hampshire highway.

Peering through the tiny slit formed by the cowl arc, the driver doesn't seem to show any outward signs of distress aside from slightly reduced speed. Thanks to the power of technology, another driver with a similar abandon for safety recorded the spectacle for the internet crowds, at least until law enforcement put an end to the shenanigans.

Here's a tip: if your hood latch happens to give up the ghost while you're rocketing toward the horizon, calmly slow your ride and pull to the shoulder. If you're able, close the hood and continue on your way. If you aren't, do us all a favor and call for a tow. Hit the jump to check out the insanity for yourself.

K-1 Sold to Japanese Real Estate Firm Barbizon

K-1, the largest and most prestigious kickboxing promotion in the world, is no longer owned by Fighting and Entertainment Group and has been sold to Japanese real estate firm Barbizon Co,. Ltd.

Promotional group FEG and president Sadaharu Tanikawa have operated K-1 since September 2003 but the promotion has fallen upon hard times recently due to the rapid decline in the the sport's popularity in Japan and the questionable entertainment-centric direction that Tanikawa has steered K-1.

The sale comes as no surprise as Tanikawa admitted back in January that FEG would "die" due to major financial issues. The sale to Barbizon does come as a surprise to many though as it was heavily rumored that a prominent Dutch promotional and management company was set to take the reins of K-1.

Full details from this historic deal after the break.

Barbizon Co,. Ltd now owns the following trademarks:

K-1
K-1 Grand Prix
K-1 Fighting Network
K-1 World GP
K-1 International Association
K-1 World Association
Federation Internationale de K-1 Association
K-1 Exercise
Dynamite!
K-1 Premium Dynamite!

Barbizon does not own K-1 Koshien, K-1 MAX or DREAM.

K-1 Koshien is a yearly nation-wide tournament for highschool students. The K-1 Koshien trademark remains the property of gambling conglomerate Fields.

K-1 MAX (standing for Middleweight Artistic eXtreme) includes the 70 kg and 63 kg weight divisions. It is unclear as to who owns the MAX trademark. MAX has been tied to broadcaster TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) in the past but FEG recently promoted a 63 kg MAX Japan tournament without TBS and have also announced plans for a 70 kg MAX tournament, again most likely without TBS.

DREAM, FEG's MMA promotion, remains under the control of FEG and Real Entertainment.

It is not yet clear what role current K-1 staff will play in the running of future operations. Given the astounding level of public criticism that FEG President Sadaharu Tanikawa has received recently, it seems unlikely that he will be involved with the running of K-1 going forward. K-1 creator Kazuyoshi Ishii is likely to be part of the new K-1 however as he has been hinting at this transfer for some time.

Ishii recently revealed that the new K-1 will hold a Heavyweight World GP every two years rather than the annual tournament that has been running since 1993. There will also be more of a focus on making this new K-1 appeal to a global audience. Until now, Japan has hosted every K-1 World GP Final.

Barbizon Co,.Ltd was formed in 1967, currently employs 35 employees and has 484,000,000 Japanese yen (approximately 6.2 million dollars) in capital. The company specializes in real estate and owns a number of hotels and apartment complexes in Southeast Asia and Japan.

It appears that the takeover actually took place approximately one month ago however the deal was not made public until Thursday afternoon. A press conference to announce details of the takeover has not yet been scheduled, and FEG officials have not yet commented on the sale.

K-1 was formed in 1992 by karate practitioner and Seidokan Karate creator Kazuyoshi Ishii. Since 1993, the promotion has staged the sport's most prestigious annual kickboxing tournament, the K-1 World GP.

In December 2002, Ishii was arrested for tax evasion and so he passed the promotion over to former pro wrestling journalist Sadaharu Tanikawa. FEG was formed in September of 2003 in an attempt to distance the K-1 brand from the shamed Ishii. Tanikawa took a more pro wrestling and entertainment-based approach to the promotion. The Japanese fight sport industry went through a boom in popularity peaking on Dec. 31, 2003, but Tanikawa's new angle has not been proven popular with fans or fighters as K-1 has been on the decline ever since.

A seemingly endless list of fighters and managers have spoken out against FEG and Tanikawa in recent times due to unpaid fight purses and the objections to the direction that Tanikawa has chosen to take K-1.

Correction: The article originally stated that Kazuyoshi Ishii was jailed in December 2002. Ishii was in fact arrested in December 2002. Ishii actually went to jail on June 11, 2007 after exhausting appeals on charges of corporate tax evasion and destruction of evidence relating to the case.

Next Face of Women's MMA? Marloes Coenen, Miesha Tate Ready to Answer Call

When Zuffa, parent company of the UFC, bought Strikeforce earlier this year, fans could practically hear the collective thud of hearts dropping into the stomachs of female fighters and fans of women's MMA.

After all, UFC and Zuffa president Dana White has been repeatedly adamant that he doesn't believe female MMA will ever realistically have a place in the UFC - largely because of his belief the talent pool of upper-echelon women's fighters is not deep enough to sufficiently fill out multiple divisions over a sustained period of time.

With Strikeforce under the Zuffa umbrella, the fear that the most well-known home for women's MMA could disappear into the ether with a possible future merger with the UFC is a real one. But it's one that women's 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen and her Saturday challenger, Miesha Tate, have no problem tackling head on.

"What I see is that Zuffa isn't a non-profit organization - they have to make money," Coenen said after a short workout Wednesday. "But that's the reason they keep (the women) here in the Zuffa family. A lot of guys are watching MMA, but if we can draw in the women, as well, and women say, 'Hey, they're normal girls and they kick (butt), and I can do that, too,' I think we can double the audience. If we can do that, we make more money - and they'll keep us around."

Coenen (19-4, 3-1 Strikeforce), who defends her title for the second time after beating Sarah Kaufman for the belt last October, believes her fight with Tate being the co-main event on a Showtime-televised card - in the Zuffa era, no less - is a good sign.

"They did put us in the co-main event - they could've put us in the Challengers show or on a non-televised card, but they chose not to do that," Coenen said. "By making that decision, that gives me a lot of confidence. Now that we've been given the chance, we have to prove that we deserve to be here."

Tate ( 11-2, 4-1 Strikeforce) comes in riding a five-fight winning streak, though this will be her first fight in nearly a year. The Team Alpha Male-trained fighter hasn't been shy about challenging White to give her sport a fighting chance - and she said taking advantage of the opportunity is crucial on Saturday.

"It's not exactly pressure, but I feel really motivated," Tate said. "I feel like this is our opportunity, and I want to make the most of it. I feel like there's going to be a lot of people paying attention to this, and Dana and Lorenzo (Fertitta) and all the guys at the UFC - Zuffa might start giving women a little bit of recognition, maybe start actually taking notice of it and becoming more informed on what it's about. Marloes and I are the two top ranked, so we really can say a lot about the caliber of talented women out there - and that's what I'm hoping for. I hope we really raise the bar."

Women's MMA had its first "face" of the sport in Gina Carano. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos beat her two years ago for the 145-pound Strikeforce belt. Carano, set to star in the major movie "Haywire" this fall, has been out of action since that loss, and Cyborg, too, has been out for over a year.

The door appears to be wide open for Coenen or Tate to seize the title as the next face of women's MMA.

"I think Gina did a hell of a job - she really made (women's MMA) grow here," Coenen said. "I will always be thankful to her and respect her a lot. And Cyborg, if you don't respect her, you're crazy. If I can be (the new face of the sport), I'll do my best and I will honor the game and all the women in it, too."

Coenen and Tate fight in the co-main event of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson on Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, a northwest suburb of Chicago. The main event features a heavyweight non-title superfight between light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko. The main card airs live on Showtime at 10 p.m. Eastern.

Superiority complex

As sort of a follow up to my last post about why we’re here and what we’re doing this for, I’d like to take a moment to talk about an issue that’s been weighing on my mind a bit. The Skydiver Superiority Complex. Now, I’m not talking about those people who rag on other people [...]

Down on Top

The final round of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series delivered the drama it promised. This strength-to-strength online racing series keeps producing more action, right when you think it can’t get any hotter. Not only is the bulging entry list a testament to this, the spectator gallery has become standing room only. For the Week 12 round at Silverstone, the virtual bouncer was turning people away, including yours truly. I forgot to flash my virtual media pass. Adding to the weight of the series regulars such as Madison Down, Rens Broekman and Mitch McLeod, Mick Claridge joined the party having some major performances in the lower splits. Shane Van Gisbergen made a return for this epic, just to add a bit of spice. “What a season ending that was!” – Mitchell [...]

Diaz beats former MLB player Byrnes at Lake Tahoe area triathlon

Nick Diaz is about as unconventional as it gets in mixed martial arts. That includes training year round for triathlons in between all of his time at the gym.

Diaz is prepping for the biggest fight of his career, Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137 in October, but he's not curtailing any of his road work, cycling or swimming.

The former Strikeforce welterweight champ, who hasn't lost an MMA fight since 2007, finished an impressive 36th at the 30th Annual Donner Lake Triathlon.

Diaz also beat out former Oakland A's outfielder Eric Byrnes in the process. It took Diaz 2 hours, 46 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 0.9 mile swing, 24.8 mile bike ride and 6.5 mile run around Donner Lake.

"It keeps me in great shape. I'll be in great shape when I start training camp," Diaz told the North Tahoe Bonanza. "A lot of mixed martial arts guys who train only at one sport will fall short at some point in a fight, whereas an all-around good athlete can go further, in my opinion."

In April, Diaz was in Las Vegas for an Xterra race. He explained to Cagewriter's Maggie Hendricks why he races eight or nine times a year.

I just like to race. I like the open water swim. It gives me something to build for. During [triathlon] season, every two weeks, I'll race. In that training, I get stronger and stronger, building up to the race. After a race, a lot of people will crash, but I'll keep building up and building up until I have to fight. It gives me something to not crash after the race is over. I try to keep the ball rolling until I have a fight.

A Weekend to Forget

This past weekend saw the S.A. Shelby Can-Am championship head to the fastest track in South Africa, the East London Grand Prix circuit. After securing a hard-fought win at the last round at Zwartkops, debuting for new sponsor Hollard Insurance, reigning champion Darryn Lobb was aiming for nothing less than the top step of the podium. After struggling for pace at the previous round, the Kyalami based resident, elected to run the car of Sean Grieve who was unable to make the event. It was a car with which Lobb had previously won both events at Zwartkops in 2010. New body work, and a slightly modified design, meant that the Hollard-backed car was not only going to be fast, but also eye-catching. In summary though, East London proved that it’s [...]

Video: BMW driver's squeeze play fails to go as planned

bmw lane splitting

We weren't aware of any plans for BMW to start up The Hire series again. Perhaps the owner of what looks to be a 3 Series in the following clip knows something we don't, and is looking to audition for the role of The Driver.

In any event, the wheelman attempts to squeeze between two cars on the highway, but quickly learns that lane-splitting is best left to those on two wheels. Any passing room that existed quickly disappears, but clearly, that's not enough to stop the driver. Click past the jump to watch the chaos unfurl.

Stoner: Win a reminder of potential

Casey Stoner says his victory at Laguna Seca will serve to remind his rivals what he is capable of after a short win drought. The championship leader extended his points advantage back up to 20 points by overcoming title rival Jorge Lorenzo in today's United States Grand Prix, ending a run of three races without a victory since he triumphed at Silverstone. "We felt good, really good, at the end," said Stoner.

Bianchi says sorry for mistake

Jules Bianchi has apologised to his ART GP2 team for the mistake which cost him victory at the Nurburgring on Sunday. The Ferrari junior driver led from lap two until the end of the penultimate lap, when he put a wheel on a white line under braking for the chicane and got out of shape. That allowed Romain Grosjean to pass him into the final corner, and Bianchi had to settle for second.
