Tompkins died of a heart attack, funeral arrangements and memorial fund set

The mixed martial arts world is still reeling from the shocking passing of trainer Shawn Tompkins.

An autopsy revealed that the 37-year-old died from a heart attack in his sleep while staying at a friend's house in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Sunday.

"Shawn's family had a history of heart disease," said Tompkins' manager Gary Ibarra of Athletic Management & Representation Group (AMR) told the London Free Press. "Shawn had an enlarged heart and blocked arteries. No one had any idea. It really doesn't matter how much you exercise and what kind of shape you are in. That's why everyone is in such shock."

Tompkins was married to Sam Stout's sister Emilie. Stout, a UFC fighter, worked with Tompkins for years.

"I don't know what to say," Stout said. "It's not supposed to be happen to a healthy 37-year-old person. Who would think he had to get checked out for that?"

Tompkins worked out of Adrenaline Training Centre in London, Ontario and TapouT Training Center in Las Vegas, NV with Stout, Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki and Ronnie Mann. The former head coach at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Tompkins also cornered fighters like Randy Couture, Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, Jay Hieron, Forrest Griffin, Mark Coleman and Gray Maynard.

Cage Potato reports that a memorial fund has been set up.

[...] The Shawn Tompkins Memorial Fund, which is currently accepting contributions to assist Emilie with funeral and burial costs.

"Shawn was more than a client," Ibarra stated via press release. "His passion and vision for MMA was infectious, evident by how he could motivate his fighters to become better athletes and people. On behalf of AMR Group's athletes and staff, we extend our deepest sympathies to Emilie, Sam and Shawn's entire family. His spirit will live on in our hearts."

To contribute to Tompkins' memorial fund, send an email to TeamTompkins@ShogunMMA.com. Details of the memorial service will be announced in the coming days atAMRGroup.tv.

The funeral service at West Park Church in London is Friday at 1 p.m.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Anderson Silva Stands Far Above the Rest

Anderson Silva defeated Yushin Okami in the main event of UFC 134.Saying that Anderson Silva the best fighter in MMA is an accurate statement, but it's also an understatement. Just calling Silva the best doesn't really capture just how big a gap there is between Silva and the rest of the sport right now.

Since signing with the UFC in 2006, Silva is 14-0, which is the best record anyone has ever had in the UFC. But it's not just the fact that he keeps winning, it's the way he wins. Twelve of Silva's 14 victories are by stoppage, and he has a wide variety of ways he can stop his opponents: He knocked out Chris Leben and Rich Franklin with knees, James Irvin and Forrest Griffin with punches, and Vitor Belfort with a front kick. He TKO'd Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt with punches, and Franklin with knees in a rematch. (He also TKO'd Patrick Cote, although you can't give Silva a whole lot of credit for the way Cote's knee buckled underneath him.) Silva made Chael Sonnen tap out to a triangle armbar, made Dan Henderson tap out to a rear-naked choke and made Travis Lutter tap out by holding him in a triangle and elbowing him in the head.

Winning percentage and stoppages aren't the only way to measure a fighter, but a fighter's record gives you a pretty good idea how good he is, and how often he finishes his opponent gives you a pretty good idea how dominant he is. And there's really no one on Silva's level when it comes to fighting at a high level, consistently winning and stopping his opponents with great frequency.

We'll compare Silva to the rest of the best fighters in MMA below.

Top 10 Pound-for-Pound Fighters in MMA
(Number in parentheses is the fighter's rank in the last pound-for-pound list.)

1. Anderson Silva (1): Silva is the all-time UFC record holder for consecutive wins and wins in title fights, and he's twice moved up in weight class and destroyed the two opponents he met at 205 pounds. The only real question is whether the UFC can keep finding good opponents for him; other than a Sonnen rematch there's not a lot for Silva to do at middleweight.

2. Georges St. Pierre (2): In the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, St. Pierre has gone 10-1, with three wins by TKO, one by submission and six by decision. The methodical way St. Pierre controls fights by insisting on doing what he does best and never allowing his opponents to do what they do best is impressive, but it's not as impressive as the way Silva crushes people. And, of course, GSP lacks Silva's undefeated record inside the Octagon.

3. Jon Jones (3): Jones' record looks a lot like Silva's: He's 13-1, with eight wins by knockout or TKO, three by submission and two by decision. And Jones could easily be 14-0 with one more stoppage; his disqualification loss to Matt Hamill is really more like a TKO win for the purposes of considering how good Jones is. The difference between Jones and Silva is that Jones has only been fighting professionally for three and a half years, has only been in the UFC for eight fights and only started fighting the best of the best this year. Jones is the active fighter whose accomplishments may look the most like Silva's one day, but Jones isn't there yet.

4. Jose Aldo (4): In the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, Aldo is 11-0, with seven wins by knockout or TKO and four wins by decision. Aldo is somewhat similar to Silva as a striker in the diverse way he can finish fights with his hands, feet, knees and elbows. But he's not quite as consistent as Silva, and unlike Silva he hasn't yet proven that he can finish fights with his submission game.

5. Dominick Cruz (5): In the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, Cruz is 12-1, with one win by knockout, one win by TKO on a doctor stoppage, one win by submission and nine wins by decision. Cruz's stand-up style is very effective in its own way but a lot different from -- and nowhere near as destructive as -- Silva's style. Cruz is the master of point-fighting, and that's respectable, but if he ever wants to be considered one of the truly great fighters he's going to need to finish more fights.

6. Frank Edgar (6): In the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, Edgar is 10-1-1, with one win by TKO, one by submission and eight by decision. The loss and the draw came against the man Edgar will face at UFC 136...

7. Gray Maynard (7): In the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, Maynard is 8-0-1, with one win by knockout and seven by decision. Maynard also had two wins, a loss and a no contest in his Ultimate Fighter days. Maynard was something of an anti-Silva during his eight-fight winning streak prior to fighting Edgar, as he'd consistently win but rarely dominate and often bore. His fight with Edgar, however, was sensational, and if he can win the rematch, he'll eliminate any doubt about what a great fighter he is.

8. Cain Velasquez (8): Velasquez is 9-0, including eight wins by knockout or TKO and one by decision. Velasquez has only seven UFC fights, so he has a long way to go before he has achieved as much as Silva, but his run of dominance to begin his career has been impressive. The big question is whether he can keep it up as he recovers from a serious shoulder injury, starting with Junior dos Santos in November.

9. Shogun Rua (10): Shogun's pounding of Forrest Griffin moves him up a spot in the pound-for-pound rankings. The Rua of the Pride days was a lot like Silva: In the three and a half years he fought in Pride, Shogun went 12-1, with nine wins by knockout or TKO, one win by submission and one win by decision. But he's not quite that fighter anymore; in the same time that Silva has gone 14-0, Rua is 8-3. Rua is still a great fighter who I'd pick to beat anyone at 205 pounds not named Jon Jones, but knee injuries have robbed him of some of his explosiveness.

10. Junior dos Santos (9): Dos Santos is 13-1, with eight wins by knockout or TKO, three by submission and two by decision. Unlike Silva, dos Santos's decision victories have been thoroughly impressive, and he has shown knockout power like few fighters in MMA have. If he passes his toughest test yet when he faces Velasquez, dos Santos will have a good case that he belongs near the top of the pound-for-pound list.

Sonnen exclusive: Silva?s going down against Okami at UFC 134

Anderson Silva is clearly the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. When healthy and interested, he's destroyed every UFC opponent put in front of him. but Chael Sonnen sees an opening for Yushin Okami against the middleweight champ and thinks the Japanese star is leaving UFC 134 with the title strap.

"[Silva]'s lost to Okami once before. This is a rematch and Yushin already beat him once," said Sonnen speaking of a 2006 match up at 170 pounds where Okami picked up a win via disqualification because Silva delivered an illegal upkick. "Yushin is a lot better now, so I can't imagine how he wouldn't beat him again."

Sonnen says Silva has ducked opponents who play to his weakness, takedown defense. He went as far as saying the fight against Okami won't even be competitive. Sonnen's entitled to his opinion. After all, he's the guy who beat Silva for four and a half rounds at UFC 117 before getting caught in a late submission.

Sonnen also told a story about Vitor Belfort on "The MMA Insiders" show in Las Vegas on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM. He was so bullish on Belfort's chances against Silva at UFC 126 that plunked down a little money on the underdog. He said all hopes ended when he saw Belfort at the weigh-in. He says Belfort backed down to Silva's attempts of intimidation. After that, Sonnen ripped up his ticket.

Keselowski wins again at Bristol

Brad Keselowski took his recent impressive streak a step further by claiming his third victory of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season on Saturday night at Bristol. The 27-year-old was a top-five contender all night long and led the race at seven different times, initially thanks to staying out while the leaders pitted under the first caution. He would remain a threat from then on but never looked quite as dominant as both Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth did, the Hendrick driver leading the most laps while his Roush rival was up front for 110 of the 550 laps scheduled.

UFC on Versus 5?s Three Stars: Henderson, Lytle and Cerrone

The fighters delivered on the UFC's first trip to the Dairy State, giving exciting performances from the top to the bottom of the card. That made the task of picking out just three stars even tough. Cagewriter's picks are below. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Ben Henderson: After losing the WEC belt to Anthony Pettis, the enduring image of "Smooth" was getting kicked in the face. He used that loss as fuel, first beating Mark Bocek at UFC 129, and then aggressively taking out Jim Miller on Sunday night. According to CompuStrike, Henderson outstruck Miller 148-26 and was 7-for-7 on takedown attempts.

No. 2 star -- Chris Lytle: Few athletes and even fewer fighters get to retire on a win. After 54 fights, 20 with the UFC, Lytle earned that honor with one last Fight of the Night performance, topped off with a Submission of the Night choke. Now, he'll have an extra $130,000 and a Harley-Davidson to help with his retirement.

No. 3 star -- Donald Cerrone: Before the UFC and WEC merger, "Cowboy" felt like the kid brother of the UFC's lightweight division, not quite getting the respect of his UFC brethren. After landing 24 power strikes to Charles Oliveira's four and TKOing the Brazilian in the first round, Cerrone joked that the little brothers had exacted their revenge.

WEEK 4 of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series by Bigpond Sport was the “Enduro”- a whopping 38 laps of the Aussie V8′s spiritual home, Phillip Island. There would have been a fourth Nfinity driver in the top ten but for Scott U’Ren being plagued with internet dramas pre-race. ?Bang? Ludwig gives Sadollah a stand-up lesson at UFC on Versus 5

Duane Ludwig is still a relatively young fighter, but the guy has logged 88 pro fights between mixed martial arts and kickboxing, so when Amir Sadollah decided to stand with a guy nicknamed "Bang," he was asking for it.

What Sadollah got was a beating for two rounds and probably a major headache. Ludwig stormed to a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three scorecards, at UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee, Wis.

"I've been doing this since I was 15. Not to be boastful, but I'm good at what I do," Ludwig, 33, said. "I just have good composure. I drill these things over and over."

Sadollah (6-3, 6-3 UFC) has an excellent Muay Thai background, but not on the pro level. He's also not a great boxer and Ludwig took advantage of a guy in just his ninth professional fight. From the opening seconds, Ludwig landed wicked combinations inside. The left hook was especially devastating as Sadollah looked a step slow in the pocket.

The champ from Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter," showed a granite chin because he got rocked and appeared to be on shaky legs with 1:25 left in the first. It happened again in the second when Bang ripped him with a left hook with 2:40 left in the round.

Sadollah, who's a pretty solid ground fighter from the top, tried to get it to the mat often, but failed on eight occasions.

"I'm not playing. I'm a mixed martial artist," proclaimed Ludwig about his takedown defense.

Ludwig (21-11, 4-2 UFC) tired a bit in the third, but his stamina was still better than many of his previous fights where he's cost himself victories due to exhaustion. Frankly, Ludwig was probably a little shocked that some of those shots over the first two rounds didn't finish Sadollah.

"Amir ... he's good man. I wasn't nervous for this fight and that got me scared. Amir is a tough guy," Ludwig said.

Report: Mini Paceman confirmed for production

Mini Paceman Concept

Car and Driver is reporting that the Mini Paceman has been given the go-ahead for production. The news comes courtesy of company chief Kay Segler, who said that the high-riding three-door is headed to the States.

The Paceman is based off of the tall Countryman CUV, which means that buyers will probably be able to snap up the vehicle in all-wheel drive if they feel so inclined. Even so, it will be a while before the Paceman makes it to dealers. Car and Driver says it will likely land in 2013 as a 2014 model.

What can we expect in terms of styling? If Mini patent drawings are any indication, the wee beastie will stick as close as possible to the Paceman Concept, though the name may change before the production car lands. We think the long roof line and upright nose on the Paceman is plenty becoming, though we have to wonder how many consumers are looking at the Countryman and thinking, "Just like that, but can you make it less functional?"

Mini Paceman confirmed for production originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 15:58:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Report: Road Trip! Russia approves tunnel to Alaska under Bering Strait

Bering Strait

The Russian government has given the go-ahead on an ambitious new tunnel project that could connect Siberia with Alaska via an underground rail line. If completed, the $65 billion project will be the longest underwater tunnel in the world, besting the Chunnel between England and France by twice the distance. The planned course would stretch over 65 miles and would snake beneath the Big and Little Diomede Islands. According to Inhabitat, the project will be funded by a private and public partnership. So why build it?

Aside from being a civil engineering marvel, the tunnel would also provide an efficient way to move 100 million tons of freight per year. In addition, the tunnel could provide an easy transmission route for electricity developed by tidal energy stations and wind plants in Russia to Alaska and Canada. In addition, the rail system would complete a high-speed network that could stretch from London to New York City. Unfortunately, the project doesn't seem to be geared toward passenger travel. At least, not for now. Thanks for the tip, Chad!

Power heads Sears Point warm-up

Will Power topped the timesheets in a delayed warm-up session ahead of Sunday's IndyCar race at Sears Point. Heavy fog forced the session to be postponed by more than an hour, and when the cars took to the track it was KV Racing's Ernesto Viso who led the initial phase.

Dana White interview: UFC president not seeing title rematches for Belfort or Fitch anytime soon

Dana White understands the desires of both Jon Fitch and Vitor Belfort to get back in the Octagon for a shot at UFC titles, but he's also got a promotion to run. Joining ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show on Friday, White said it's a tough to sell Jon Fitch against Georges St-Pierre again. The same goes for Belfort against UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Belfort doesn't believe that's the case. He wants the title shot and say Silva is afraid of him.

"If he didn't throw that kick, this would've happened to him. He knows that," Belfort said during the UFC 133 postfight press conference. "I would like to fight the winner of [Yushin] Okami and Anderson [at UFC 134]."

White was shocked by Belfort's words.

"Craziest statement ever made. 'Listen, if he didn't knock me out I would've won that fight!' Yeah, okay. Maybe," laughed White (8:25 mark).

That said, White is an admirer of Belfort. He just wants to see more consistency out of the veteran.

"The problem with a guy like Vitor Belfort is he's one of the best in the world [but] Vitor is just inconsistent," White said. "[...] Vitor Belfort needs to get into a consistent game where every fight looks like the Akiyama fight. Even if he goes in against a guy and it's an absolute war, at least Vitor Belfort went in and let his hands go."

Belfort has a lot of work to get done before he gets in there again with Silva.

"Vitor Belfort went in against Anderson Silva and got hit with a front kick and got knocked out in the first 30 seconds of the fight. Who does he gotta to beat and how long's he gotta go before you want to see him fight Anderson Silva again? Maybe a couple of Akiyama type knockouts and maybe we are ready to see him face Anderson again," White said.

Bottas dominates first Spa race

Valtteri Bottas extended his GP3 championship lead with a dominant victory in wet conditions at Spa. The ART driver grabbed the lead from his team-mate James Calado by out-dragging him away from the start. Calado then had a look to the inside, but Bottas left just enough room to avoid contact and hold the advantage.

UFC 134: Shogun Rua Knocks Out Forrest Griffin

Shogun Rua knocks out Forrest Griffin at UFC Rio.In his first fight since losing the UFC light heavyweight title, Shogun Rua showed that he's still a force inside the Octagon, knocking out Forrest Griffin in the first round at UFC 134.

A hard right hand had Griffin stumbling toward the ground, and Rua went on the attack, knocking Griffin down and jumping on top of him. From there Rua rained down punches from the top, and the dazed Griffin could do nothing but flail in his attempts to block Rua's punches. As Rua began to land hammer fists Griffin couldn't do anything, and the referee eventually stepped in to stop it after it was clear Griffin was out of it.

Although Rua was brutalized by Jon Jones at UFC 128 in March, no one should take that result as evidence that Rua is done: He improved his professional record to 20-5 and showed against Griffin that he has plenty of fight left in him.

Griffin, who fell to 18-7, will always be one of the UFC's most popular fighters, and he'll have a lot more big fights ahead of him. But this bout showed that while Rua is among the truly elite fighters in the light heavyweight division, Griffin is not.

UFC 134 continued on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a pair of preliminary bouts on Spike TV, including one of the strangest moments in MMA history when Rousimar Palhares incorrectly assumed he had finished Dan Miller in the opening round.

Tensions easing, Overeem could be back soon

The UFC wanted to send a message and it appears it worked. That's a great thing for fight fans concerning the dismissal of Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem.

Overeem could be on his way back to Strikeforce or welcomed into the UFC.

"We're talking to Overeem. When everything fell apart, you guys heard me come out and say, 'We can't do business with these guys the way these guys want to do business,' meaning his management. Well they've changed their opinions on how they can do business with us, so now we can," Dana White told 790 the Ticket in Miami (1:54:00 mark).

Zuffa's issue was with Golden Glory. The management group was asking all fighter checks to be sent its way and then it would pay the fighters. Zuffa refused to do it and Overeem, his brother Valentijn, Marloes Coenen and Jon Olav Einemo were released from their Zuffa deals. Fight fans were also facing the possibility of seeing another GG fighter Sergei Kharitonov, win the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix only to be cut following the tourney.

Dartz Playboy shoot

Russian automaker Dartz is the automotive equivalent of The Jersey Shore. It produces the tackiest products that you can't stop looking at or watching. Case in point: this latest video from Dartz, which highlights the ladies-only armored Prombron Iron Diamond SUV, a Playboy bunny from the Latvian version of the magazine's September issue and a bottle of Russo-Baltique vodka that might just cost more than the car.

Click past the jump for the video, but turn down your speakers before you do. Whoever put the clip together decided to twist the sound level to 11, which could make for unwanted attention in the office. Also, the music has lots and lots of language that's not safe for work.

UFC sounds ready to welcome back Henderson with possible fight at FOX/UFC debut

Dan Henderson's recent run has surprised many. When he left the UFC at the age of 39 to sign a deal with rival Strikeforce, there's was little chance he'd ever return to the bigger promotion. Never say never.

Hendo has put together an impressive win streak, is without a contract and the UFC is looking for a mega-fight to put on FOX. Henderson, now 41, may be in the right place at the right time. Reading this interview with Brazil's Tatame, UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta is sounds excited for a Henderson return:

What do you expect from UFC on FOX's first edition [Nov. 12]? Do you already have a main event set?

We don't have a main event set yet, we'll find out probably after this Saturday, these fights in Rio, then we'll set a main event. But it'll be something big. It'll be a big fight.

We reported this Monday that Anderson Silva could put his middleweight title on the line against Dan Henderson, one he beats Yushin Okami?

I would love to do that. Anderson just needs a win.

Silva defends his UFC middleweight title this weekend against Yushin Okami in Brazil at UFC 134.

Henderson is coming off three straight devastating Strikeforce wins over Fedor Emelianenko, Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante. The Fedor fight was at heavyweight while the Feijao/Babalu bouts were at 205 pounds.

Henderson is a small light heavyweight and it appears Zuffa would love to see him back in the mix at 185 pounds. Henderson (28-8, 5-2 UFC) fought Silva at UFC 82 on 2008. The former Greco-Roman Olympic wrestler dominated Silva in the first round, then strayed from his gameplan in the second and was choked out by the champ.
