United in Charleston: Sunday notes
Some follow-up notes in the aftermath of United?s first preseason win of 2012, a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire in the opening match of the Carolina Challenge Cup on Saturday night.
OH MY GOAL
For the first two-thirds of Saturday?s showdown against the Fire, freshly-inked designated player Hamdi Salihi went all but silent. Unable to link up with his teammates - mostly because they were all defending against Chicago?s relentless attack - Salihi looked like a forgotten man up top.

Tennessee fights canceled after liquor license denied
For good or bad, alcohol is a part of every MMA event. Whether it's fans getting liquored up in the stands or people flocking to bars to see pay-per-views, alcohol is part of the fight world. Fight organizers in Tennessee didn't want to find out what MMA would be without it.
Extreme Fight Night had to return $6,200 in sponsorship dollars after his permit was denied in Gallatin, Tenn. The city claims they didn't approve the permit because it was designated for non-profit organizations only.
"They (the attendees) will bring beer in their cars, they will be drinking in the parking lot ? we will have no control," said the company's marketing director, Christine Swartz, at the beer board hearing. "Whereas, if we sell beer within the venue, we have security; we can control that. If someone has more than one, or we think they're on the brink of a situation, we can physically have them removed."
The story ended well. Extreme Fight Night found another venue to run their fights that had beer. Fight fans had their cold beer in hand again. Phew.

Photo: Jon Jones, Kate Upton and Jane Lynch pal around at Daytona 500
A UFC champ, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and an Emmy-winning actress met up at the Daytona 500 today. Jon Jones was an honorary race official, while Kate Upton and Jane Lynch were there to spend some time being awesome.
The race was delayed until Monday, so they had plenty of time to discuss throwing elbows, photoshoots, and wearing track suits. Hopefully, Lynch was offering "Bones" a cameo on "Glee." Nothing could prepare him better for his fight with Rashad Evans than a song and dance with New Directions.
Jones also got to meet some of the biggest names in racing: And he even got a car with his name on it.

UFC 144 weigh-in extra: GTL, new Octagon girl and ?Rampage? vs. Franklin
Sure the weigh-in for UFC 144 was a little later than normal, but it certainly delivered. There was a new Octagon girl, one fighter appeared to have just walked off the set of "Jersey Shore" and Quinton Jackson already booked himself his next fight.
Yoshihiro Akiyama brought it big time channeling the powers of GTL. We're not sure about the laundry part, but Akiyama certainly hit the gym to get down from his old weight of 185 to his new division down at 170. He also put Snooki to shame with a beautiful tan.
Meanwhile, it was pretty clear Jackson missed a lot of his gym time. Jackson, who gave hints that he might miss weight during the Dana White's second vlog (2:03 mark), clocked in at a hefty 211 for his fight at 205 pounds. Fuel TV's guest analyst Rich Franklin was exasperated and basically called it a joke. "Rampage" got wind of the comments and snapped at Franklin.
"My friend already texted me what Rich Franklin said and Rich Franklin need to watch his mouth before I smack him the next time I see him. He a fighter the same way I'm a fighter, he should watch what he say," Jackson said (1:50 mark). "You don't question if a fighter is taking his fight serious or not. I'm a fighter, I take all my fights serious and I'm tired of people saying that."
Jackson is dead wrong here. Franklin did his job and Jackson's focus for the fight is absolutely in question.
Looking for further satisfy the Japanese audience, the UFC held auditions for a new UFC 144 Octagon girl. They came up with a former Miss Japan contestant in Azusa Nishigaki.
Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani caught up with Nishigaki here.

Photo: Benson Henderson celebrates UFC lightweight title with his mom
When Benson Henderson walked out of the cage after winning the UFC lightweight title, he walked right past security and the UFC staff who was directing him towards the locker room. He had to go celebrate with the woman who has supported him throughout his career: his mom.
In a sweet moment, Henderson hugged his mother. She pulled back and grabbed at his belt, bursting with pride over her son's accomplishment. Henderson provided another great performance in beating Frankie Edgar, but didn't forget to say thank you to his mom.
He admitted that he did hear her cheering during his fight.
""My mom has a pretty distinct voice. I can hear her everywhere," Henderson said.

Jon Jones misses his friendship with Rashad Evans
Since Rashad Evans and Jon Jones stopped being training partners last year, the two have spewed nothing but vitriol at each other. But as UFC 144 and their title bout nears, Jones talked about how he misses their friendship with the Score in Chicago.
"We trained together and we had good times, but this competition has come between our friendship, which sucks," Jones told host Laurence Holmes. "I do miss being friends with the guy. But it's business, and he's coming after my championship. I've gotta do what I've gotta do. It might be a little awkward punching him in the face, but I'm sure the first time he swings at me, it will get reactionary."
Though fighters quite often forget their pre-fight squabbles after bouts, Jones says a renewed friendship is unlikely. He just wants respect between the two.
"I'd like to get to a point of being cordial, but to be friends again is not necessary. There's thousands of wonderful people in the world I can meet. After all that's been said, we can just live our lives. Respect is all that's necessary for me."
Hoping for respect between the two didn't prevent Jones from taking a few digs at Evans and how he performed in his win over Phil Davis.
"I don't know if it's because of changing camps, but his body looked a little softer. He couldn't finish Phil Davis, a guy who is pretty much a rookie. [Ed. note -- Davis has 10 fights.] I got even more motivated to out-train him."
Jones thinks that if the same Evans who fought Davis shows up in Atlanta in April for their bout, it will be another title defense.
"Rashad's been in the game for almost 10 years now [Ed. note -- Eight years], and he didn't really show why he's the No. 2 ranked athlete. We didn't see any legit boxing combinations, no kicking, no powerful double-leg dives. He was really just out there existing. If that's the same fighter who comes out when we fight, easier day for me."

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Fights for ?Mayhem,? Evan Dunham and Eddie Alvarez
Though MMA's spring schedule is not as dizzying as its winter pace, there are plenty of fight cards that need filling. To that end:
-- Jason "Mayhem" Miller will take on C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. This is Miller's first fight since losing the Michael Bisping at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 finale. Dollaway has been finished in his last two bouts, a TKO to Jared Hamman and a KO to Mark Munoz.
-- Evan Dunham and Edson Barboza will also meet at UFC 146. Dunham just fought at UFC on Fox 2, scoring a win over Nik Lentz. Known for his powerful striking, Barboza has never lost. His knockout of Terry Etim at UFC 142 was called one of the best knockouts in UFC history.
-- In Bellator, Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki are expected to meet in April. Alvarez was submitted by an Aoki heel hook in 2008. After that loss, he won seven straight before losing a classic title bout to Michael Chandler. Aoki is currently holds the DREAM lightweight belt.
Who will win these bouts? Talk to us in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

UFC 144 weigh-in: ?Rampage? Jackson misses weight badly, Ryan Bader fight still on
The rumors of Quinton Jackson having a lousy training camp appeared to have been true based on his condition when he stepped on the scales tonight in Tokyo.
The former UFC light heavyweight champion missed the 205-pound limit by six pounds at 211.
The non-title fight will go on as planned with Jackson giving up 20 percent of his purse to Bader. Based on Jackson's salary from recent fights, that amount could be in the $50,000 range. Jackson was paid $250,000 in his fights at UFC 130 and UFC 135.
Even at 211, Jackson's face showed the wear of trying to make weight. He was also a little softer than normal in his chest. Both main event fighters, Frank Edgar and Benson Henderson, made weight for their UFC lightweight title fight at 154 pounds. Henderson, the much bigger fighter, was incredibly cut in the midsection.
Rich Franklin, serving as an analyst on Fuel TV, called Jackson's miss "ridiculous."
[ Kevin Iole: Benson Henderson's superhero mold may come in handy ]
During his interview with Fuel's Ariel Helwani, Jackson said he suffered an injury early in training camp and couldn't get in his roadwork. The injury, which Jackson would not disclose, was healed later in camp, but by then he was still very heavy. Jackson said he woke up at 3 a.m. local time to cut weight and he was only able to go from 232 down to 211.

What to look for: UFC on Fuel TV 1
The UFC rolls out its first major card debut tonight on Fuel TV in Omaha, Ne. Jake Ellenberger has a chance to work his way into the welterweight title mix with a big win over Diego Sanchez, but the card features much more beyond the main event (Fuel TV 8 p.m. ET).
The heavyweights are definitely can't miss this evening. Stefan Struve faces the division's great anamoly in Dave Herman. A chiseled 235 pounder Herman seems to fight with little strategy, but he is dangerous. He's mocked jiu-jitsu in the past. He'd better take it seriously against Struve, who has 15 submission wins in his 21 victories.
The other thing to watch for with Herman is what sort of look he brings to the Octagon tonight. Yesterday, he looked like a Russian lumberjack.
Ellenberger returns home
Sanchez will be walking into a road spot against Omaha's Ellenberger. The city is fired up for the return of the rising UFC star.
Today Ellenberger ? born and bred in Omaha and the assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha ? was presented with the Key to the City by David Dover, Deputy Chief of Staff to Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle. The former US Marine said: "I'm honored to be recognized by the city I grew up in and fight for. It's extra pressure to fight in your hometown with all your family and friends in the front row, but I know the support from the local fans will be awesome."
UFC looks to boost FUEL
The Fox deal was a no brainer for the promotion, but it does come with some early risks by using FUEL as its clearance house for programming.
Spike was in 100 million home. Fuel is still a work-in-progress with only 36 millions. That will get boosted into the mid-40's tonight due to a free preview this week. Unfortunately, like many young networks FUEL is fighting for clearance with cable companies. Comcast, the nation's biggest cable carrier, still doesn't offer the channel. That said, the Fox folks are enthused by the early uptick with the UFC partnership.
"We've had an 80 percent increase in the target demographic of men ages 18-49, and a near 230 percent increase in overall prime-time ratings from past ratings periods," Fuel TV vice president George Greenberg said. "To say I'm jacked would be putting it mildly."
Dillashaw needs a quick bounce back victory
The pre-show favorite for the 135-pound title on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dillashaw was surprised by the much smaller John Dodson in the final. He was finished on what he thought was a flash knockdown.
The powerful wrestler faces a challenge in the very rangy Walel Watson. He's not impressed.
"He's obviously going to be the tallest bantamweight I'll ever fight. He's got a long reach. Other than that, I don't find him too dangerous. Yeah, he's going to use his reach to his advantage, but he's not dangerous with it. He likes to stay on the outside obviously and use it to his advantage, but I'm not too impressed with his ground game or his [aggression]," Dillashaw told Sherdog.
The key phrase there is aggression. Watson's striking game can be dynamic, but he rarely sits down on his strikes. He is dangerous off his back which makes this fight really interesting since Dillashaw is probably going to look for the takedown and top control. He needs to be consistently active or he could get caught.

The Girls Chew Tobacco in Norway: Halfpipe Night at the WSC
If during the superpipe semis I froze while watching under a clear, obsidian night sky, for the finals I, and everyone else, had to endure far worse: rain. At least the look was cool, the misty air lending a mystic effect to the background and hazing the bright floodlights. Only those who watched it on TV escaped the punishment, but when the world's best men and women double cork an arm's reach away, who cares about a little drizzle?
Someone had read the weather report the night before. By morning, a full twelve inches had been milled away by snowcat, with the mission of cutting out the flat and rendering the halfpipe a real half cylinder. It was to be fast. The rain even helped, lending more water for lower resistance aquaplaning. It worked. See for yourself:
http://new.livestream.com/wsc2012/finalswomenhalfpipe
http://new.livestream.com/wsc2012/finalsmenhalfpipe
Later on, I talked with someone who knows a bit about the halfpipe: Terje Haakonsen. He was pleased with the show, despite the weather. "Worse is icy and windy," he said. "A little rain we can handle." Terje saw the benefit of running the contest in these conditions after sunset : "You can actually have cloudy weather and see what you do." It helps when your event is guided by someone with sprocking cat vision.
What to say about all the tricks these pipe riders bedeviled us with? Big, smooth, video game, scary. The guys especially. But the girls may have been the best part, the women riders, I mean. Travel ten years back and tonight's feminine performance would have seemed impossible. Loopy, inverted spins loaded with styly grabs, landings to bolts, from first drop to final air. Only the crème de la crème were capable of all this, but that's the point of the World Snowboarding Championships—put them in the pipe together, and marvel at a few of the best girls that snowboarding has ever seen. Terje brought it up unprompted: "I'm pretty impressed by the girls. They stepped it up." Future female riders, get serious because your bar was raised at the WSC.
I must admit, though, that I was also awed by the spectators. Many hundreds showed up, some wearing merely Vans on their feet, and I saw only one umbrella. The drops pattered on my jacket hood like a snare drum as I gazed on a crowd of smiles. Most valiant were those who stood in a swarm to wait for entrance to the right-side pipe wall where only a limited number of people were allowed at one time.
Why anyone would wish to walk up and down the treacherously slippery path, with snow stairs only in the lower section, is testimony to the WSC's reputation. Young and old Norwegians and otherwise clung to the railing lest they slide down into oblivion on the steep, slushy, tracked-out trail. I witnessed some keeling over wipe-outs—someone would go horizontal and crash, and I would laugh with compassion. But it seemed the locals were used to such reversals. They'd get back on their feet and keep cheering. Even the girls in Norway chew tobacco.
Nothing could have dampened the celebrations. Champagne overcame the falling water, and the grins were as big as the paychecks. Props to the WSC for rewarding the girls with the same payout as the boys—$40k, $20k, and $10k. Not only did the pipe finals show us where freestyle snowboarding is currently at, they also taught us that girls can go off as most of us boys can only do on the Xbox.
Hats off to the WSC halfpipe champs.

Octagon, but no fighters, in Japanese ad for UFC 144
In the United States, we're used to seeing UFC pay-per-view ads that heavily feature the fighters on the card. Even when they break from the fight-highlight-norm-with-voiceover-and-music, like with the UFC 129 commercial featuring Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, the advertising still revolves around the fighters.
With the ad airing in Japan before this weekend's UFC 144 bout, the ad features the shadow of an octagon and the voice of cage announcer Bruce Buffer.
No Frankie Edgar or Benson Henderson to represent the main event, not even the more familiar Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Would that be enough to get you to tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

In June, the UFC cut middleweight Nate Marquardt after he could not get medical clearance to fight at UFC on Versus 4 just hours before he was scheduled to weigh in. Now, he is back in the Zuffa fold, as Strikeforce signed him to fight in their welterweight division.
His signing will strengthen a promotion that has seen four champions flee to the UFC. A bout with Tyron Woodley is reportedly in the works. Marquardt brings a recognizable name and a well-rounded game to Strikeforce.
Marquardt fought in 14 bouts for the UFC before his out-of-whack testosterone levels caused the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission to deny his chance to fight in the main event. He was immediately dismissed from the UFC by an angry Dana White.
He briefly signed with the British promotion BAMMA, but a fight never materialized. Bellator's Hector Lombard invited Marquardt to fight him in Bellator, but Marquardt didn't take the bait. His last bout was a decision win over Dan Miller at UFC 128.
