The UFC announced on Thursday that they hired Jon Anik to work with them on Fuel TV and FX broadcasts. Anik has been the host of ESPN's "MMA Live" since 2008, and was Bellator's original play-by-play man. He'll handle hosting duties on a revamped "The Ultimate Fighter," plus do play-by-play for UFC fights on FX and Fuel.
Anik spoke with Cagewriter about his legacy at ESPN, the final broadcast and his new job. He said that the opportunity to call fights and focus all of his time on MMA was just too good of an offer to pass on.
"Doing live events for a sports broadcaster is where it's at. It's what I've always wanted to do. There's nothing like the adrenaline and the rush of being a small part of that live event. For a lot of broadcasters, when you get to ESPN, that is the pinnacle. You never think you'll leave there. I wouldn't have left if there wasn't interest from the Ultimate Fighting Championship. I'm appreciative that Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White were behind me."
Anik doesn't expect to make his TV debut for the UFC until January, but his first official day as a Zuffa employee is on Monday. All of his concentration can finally be on MMA, which is what he has wanted.
"At ESPN, I was pulled in a lot of different directions. With the singular focus, I have 280 fighters to learn every inch of, and that process begins on Monday. Part of my first month in November will be research, and I'm excited to do so. They deserve to have the person representing them on TV to be as informed as humanly possible. You can be sure that I'll be learning it all."
But before that first day of work, Anik had his final broadcast with the "MMA Live" crew. Kenny Florian and Franklin McNeil, two mainstays on the show, were with Anik during today's broadcast. That show will air tonight, and you might see Anik get emotional.
"It was tough today. Kenny Florian and Franklin McNeil were both there, and they've grown into great friends of mine. We all grew together. We're going through the show today, and obviously the focus is on UFC 137, but at the end, they paid a nice little tribute and I was holding back the tears. I appreciate that ESPN let me do one final show."
He said that though MMA's coverage at ESPN has grown, it was still only about 30 percent of his work week.
"I've been pushing for increased mixed martial arts content and an increased MMA role at ESPN. Even though they've been receptive to some of that, I have hit some brick walls. I'm satisfied with a lot of the things that I've gotten done at ESPN from an MMA standpoint, there were other things that didn't materialize."
Anik said that "MMA Live" will continue on without him, though he does not know who his replacement will be. It's possible that ESPN will use a rotation of hosts to fill the job.
Though he is leaving, Anik is proud of what "MMA Live" has accomplished in its three years. The show started on the internet only, and was moved to ESPN2 after its viewership steadily increased.
"The staff wanted a news and information show cut from the same cloth as NFL Live, and I think we were able to do that. The fact that we were able to graduate to ESPN2 is really something that I will always look to with a great sense of pride, because it's very rare for ESPN to put a show on TV when they don't have rights to that sport. You don't see an NHL 2Night. A lot of the fighters who came on and served as analysts deserve a whole lot credit for that. I think that's some sort of legacy that I hope we leave, and MMA Live is going to go on long after I'm gone."
The work on ESPN prepared Anik for his new role with the UFC. A big part of his job will be the face of the UFC's programming on Fuel and FX.
"One of the goals that we have collectively with the UFC right now is to make Fuel TV a monster. There's going to be so much programming on Fuel TV and on FX that I think it's important to drive people to that platform."
Watch Anik's final episode of "MMA Live" on ESPN2 at 1 a.m. ET.

Nick Diaz was on his best behavior all week and then came yesterday's weigh-in for UFC 137. Diaz got in B.J. Penn's face and before Dana White could separate the fighters, the Strikeforce import threw a punch/elbow the Hawaiian's way.
If that shots hits Penn, Diaz would've been in a world of hurt and faced a big fine. Worse than that, what if Diaz hits Penn and B.J. couldn't fight tonight? Thankfully, that didn't happen.
Why did it happen? What makes Diaz tick? Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole and former UFC fighter Frank Trigg sat down with myself on ESPN1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show in Las Vegas to explain the mental games played by both Diaz and Penn heading into tonight's tilt at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Roy Nelson and Tyson Griffin made the other news at the weigh-in. Nelson hits the scales in fat suit. He weighed-in at 252 pounds. Sources in his camp said he's closer to 245. That's good news. A focused Nelson, in better condition could be a real player in the heavyweight division.
Griffin went the wrong way missing the featherweight limit of 145 by four pounds. Griffin attempted to lose some weight, but couldn't get down to the allowable 146 pounds. The fight will be waged at 148 and Griffin will be fined 25 percent of his "show" purse.

Nick Diaz knows he has a big challenge in front of him on Saturday night at UFC 137. In fact, he believes it's a tougher fight than the one he's was originally scheduled for against Georges St-Pierre.
"I wouldn't have picked this fight for sure," Penn told HDNet's Inside MMA. "I think he'll probably try to slip the jab and throw the overhand right (then) make a body lock or (go for a) single leg takedown. Maybe push me against the fence."
Diaz knows he could ward off the Penn attack with a safety-first mentality, but that's not in his DNA.
"I'm going to have to deal with a lot of that stuff. It's B.J. Penn so it's a real difficult fight especially for somebody like me who's going to go and try to fight, and not try to hold him and win rounds," said Diaz.
Diaz truly believes Penn is a tougher fight than the UFC welterweight champ would've presented, but you can hear he's still wants thate on an eventual GSP tilt.
"If I lose to B.J. Penn, he's either going to take me out with a right hand or he's going to go on top in some way and end in some position. He'll probably want to put a mount, take the back and put a choke. You know, finish the fight," Diaz said.
"Georges would look to just do enough to win the fight. Every fight that he does (is like that). I doubt that would've worked out with me the same way it does with a lot of the other fighters. I have the tool and what it takes to make something other than that happen in there."
Even though it's a three-rounder on Saturday, Diaz believes his big advantage may be in the cardio department. Penn has had stamina issues int he past at 170 pounds.

Dana White spent time in New York this week, surprisingly he sat down with officials from Showtime.
The UFC president has repeatedly gone on record saying he doesn't want to deal with the network, but now that Ken Hershman, Showtime's former Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports & Event Programming, has left for HBO, new doors could open.
Yesterday, White teased fans and the MMA media by suggesting something new could be on the horizon.
We checked in with Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole to find out what he's heard about the latest round of talks between the promotion and the network. It was believed that the two would be going their separate ways after the Strikeforce deal is finished, maybe not.

This may be the last hurrah for the legendary Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, but Roy Nelson knows he can't think that entering the Octagon at UFC 137.
"I think he's the same old 'Cro Cop.' If anything, he's probably more dangerous now because he wants to just prove to everybody else (he can still fight), and that's always a crazy thing," Nelson told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas (4:39 mark).
Nelson, 35, respects the 37-year-old Cro Cop.
"Cro Cop's fought some tough guys the last couple fights. He's still the same guy from 2006, 2007 ... a little bit older. If anything, he's probably a little bit wiser, as in technique-wise," said Nelson."
Nelson played it close to the vest when the issue of his weight came up. Following his loss to Frank Mir at UFC 130, lots of folks including his boss Dana White, called for Nelson to slim down a bit. Whether he's done that is anyone's guess. Nelson joked that he's heard a lot of "rumors" about his weight and what happened when he and White met to discuss his future. We'll certainly find out more this week from one side or the other.

The UFC allowed its biggest pay-per-view star Brock Lesnar to appear in the latest WWE video game. The Lesnar open in the game is pretty cool and probably has wrestling fans wishing this were true:
"Now after an extended absence ... he's back! And this time, the gloves are off. He's bigger, badder and better than ever before."
The real Lesnar then emerges. We don't get much of a look, but Lesnar does look noticably thinner in the face and a little smaller across the shoulders. After multiples battles with diverticulitis and adjusting to a new diet, it's hard to imagine Lesnar carrying 285-300 pounds like he used to.

The competition for label of top five fighter in the world is heating up nicely. That's because the fighters in the 135, 145 and 155 pound divisions are now getting the respect they deserve.
Frank Edgar, the lightweight champ, is moving up to No. 4 on the latest Yahoo! Sports' pound-for-pound list, but Dana White says that still too low.
"He's the Arturo Gatti of MMA. I have so much respect for him. I'm going to say it here tonight and I don't care who disagrees, you're wrong and I'm right ... He's the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, period," White said following UFC 136.
White's reasoning? The UFC president says Edgar is fighting out of weight class and still excelling.
"[...] If you really look at what pound-for-pound means, you cannot deny that Frankie Edgar is No.2. The guy weighs a 145 pounds, he's beating guys at 155 pounds," said White.
White admitted that he was extremely emotional after the Edgar-Gray Maynard fight at UFC 136, but he'd never seen anything like the comebacks posted by the champion.
"How many times have you seen where a guy gets hurt as bad as he did in the first round. I told you that's movie [expletive]. That stuff doesn't really happen in true life. There's two guys I've seen do it - Arturo Gatti and Frank Edgar," White said. "What he did the last time and this time ... he's an amazing human being. He's an incredible athlete. He's got a heart the size of this room. I mean, that's no promoter [expletive]."
Edgar deflected all the love by simply saying "it's a Jersey thing."
"He had 'Snooki' and 'The Situation' out there, he couldn't let them down tonight," joked White.
Do you agree with White's explanation? Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole pressed both fighter and promoter on the fact that Edgar did get rocked in both fights. The greats don't get rocked consistently, do they? Or does the weight class explanation hold water? Edgar is great and he is on top of the most competitive weight class in the world.

As Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney looks at what has happened in the fifth season, he can't help but still be amazed at how well his fighters perform week in and week out. He talked to Cagewriter about some of his favorite moments of the season and Bellator's future.
"The thing that's made me happy is the level of fights. From event no. 3 on, they've just been great. Dantas' flying knee, Alexis [Vila], the way that he knocked out Joe Warren was crazy, Brian Rogers, and saying to me in the incredibly articulate way he speaks as a teacher, 'I'm going to bring it.' And then he did. Shlemenko pulling of a submission victory, there's all these things that have been jumping out at me. There's just been moment after moment," Rebney said.
One of the fights that he is most looking forward to is the Nov. 19 title fight between champ Eddie Alvarez and tournament champ Michael Chandler. He says that no one should count out Chandler.
"Nobody is talking about Chandler in the upper echelon of the division. I'll be honest with you. I don't know if I can count on one hand the guys who can beat him."
That fight will air on MTV2, but with the UFC ending their relationship with Spike TV, there's a chance that Bellator could switch to the station that is aimed towards young men. Bellator's preliminary fights air on Spike's website, and Bellator's deal is with MTV's parent company.
"We're a great position in that our deal is with MTV networks, so it's that larger corporate umbrella. They control Spike, MTV, MTV2. You never know what the future will bring. The foreseeable future will be what it is, which is MTV2 and Spike.com for the prelims, but Spike is better than anyone in this space. They get it better than anyone."
Rebney is also excited about some of the challenges coming up for his fighters, both in and out of Bellator. He said that they are working on a match-up between DREAM fighter Shinya Aoki and Alvarez, but that it will likely happen in February, after Aoki fights in DREAM's New Year's Eve show.
Warren is working on returning to his wrestling roots and will try to make the 2012 Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic team. Rebney supports the world champion wrestler in trying to go for the gold.
"It's a great platform for Warren. If he can be our champion at 145, and then go and make the U.S. Olympic team, what a great thing for Bellator and for MMA."

Last season, UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar spoke to the New York Jets on the eve of their pivotal game against the Texans. Their come-from-behind win put them in first place and helped them get to the playoffs.
The Jets have another important game Monday night. They face the Miami Dolphins, and need a win. New York sits at 2-3 and have to come up with a win to keep pace with the Patriots and the Bills.
According to MMA Fighting, Edgar visited with Rex Ryan's team on Sunday night. The timing makes sense for Edgar, as he just came from behind again in a bout with Gray Maynard. This time, he won by KO, which is something that the Jets will want to do to their division.
But against the 0-4 Dolphins? They really need inspiration to take out the team whose coach is on the hot seat? With the Patriots and Bills on their schedule in the next few weeks, they may be going to the Edgar well a bit early.

After a busy summer, Tito Ortiz has had some time to think. That's not always a good thing with the loquacious former UFC light heavyweight champ.
Chael Sonnen recently stated that he's the "People's Champ," based on the fact that his loss against Anderson Silva at UFC 117 was less than legitimate. Now Ortiz wants a piece of that People's Champ pie.
"I showed that I'm able to compete against the best guys in the world, and I think that will help show people that if they believe in themselves, if they believe in their dream, they can accomplish anything," Ortiz said. "That's why I changed my name to 'The People's Champ.' I want everyone to know that I'm here for the fans. I want them to know that they can bounce back from anything.
In a video gaming story on ESPN.com, Ortiz pointed to a recent experience with fans as another reason for the name change.
"I signed over 15,000 autographs last weekend at the UFC fan expo," Ortiz tells me as we talk about his career resurgence, including a roster spot in the upcoming "UFC Undisputed 3" video game. "The first day I stood there for seven and a half hours. The second day I was there for over six hours. They had to kick me out. It was a lot of fun."
Based on his miracle win over Ryan Bader and fighting a heel in Rashad Evans at UFC 133, Ortiz did see a big transformation in his image. But is it enough, to make you call him the People's Champ? Or is there now a People's Champ for each weight division. I vote for Roy Nelson at heavyweight, Nick Diaz at 170, Melvin Guillard at 155

Welcome to another installment of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 recap. Who wins the prank war? Who wins the fight? Whose car ends up getting towed? Read on for spoilers and a recap.
After the last fight, Diego Brandao started to go slightly insane at Steven Siler. There seemed to be little provocation, but on TUF, there doesn't need to be provocation.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller stopped by the house to hang with his guys, but more importantly, to figure out who the mole is. He found out it was John Dodson, and decided to mess with him a bit. Instead of giving Brandao the fight he so clearly wants, they will give Dustin Neace a bout with Akira Corassani. However, they continues to make it seem like Siler and Brandao will be the fight.
At the Team Bisping practice, Miller's plan works out as Bisping's team discussed that Brandao will have the next fight.
So, do you guys want to read about prank wars? Really? OK. Corassani and Neace's problems started last week when they messed with each other's things, but Neace was especially angry when the special, special hat that Mayhem brought him went missing. He retaliated by taking a bunch of Corassani's food, and throwing it all over the Team Bisping ready room at the training center. This turned into a war of words where Corassani challenged Neace to a fight "in the garden at 7:00. If he's a man, he'll come to the garden!" That's an amazing sentence.
Their jawing continued right until the fight match-ups, where a whole lot of bleeped out language is uttered. It veers from the misogynistic to the homophobic to just plain nonsensical. Fantastic. When Miller finally announces that they are fighting, they butt heads as they face off, then start fighting.
But wait! It turns into a more ridiculous bar fight. As Miller and Bisping try to break up the fight, one of Miller's coaches takes exception to Bisping pushing him, and Miller and Bisping start jawing. When it finally all settles down, Miller points out that Brandao vs. Siler will be the second fight.
Side note before the fights: Two of Bisping's fighters put an "M" for Miller on the handicapped parking spot. Miller then parks in it. That's disappointing, and karma will get you.
Fight one -- Akira Corassani (Team Bisping) vs. Dustin Neace (Team Miller)
Round 1: For two fighters who jawed so much, they spend quite a long time chasing each other around the cage. Finally, Neace tries to throw a back kick, which Corassani caught and used to throw Neace to the ground. After avoiding upkicks, Corassani goes into Neace's guard. Neace holds off Corassani with good grappling, and then grabs him in a leg lock. Team Miller says that Corassani tapped, but Team Bisping denies it. They return to their feet, and Neace ends it with a takedown.
Round 2: Corassani quickly pushes Neace's back into the cage, but does not accomplish much in the clinch. The two stand and trade until Corassani knocks Neace down with one punch. Neace goes to the ground and follows with several punches, but they're ineffective. The fight goes on this way, with Neace holding off Corassani, but Corassani remaining in control, for the rest of the round.
When the final horn sounds, Neace goes to his corner, but Corassani goes over to Neace and dances around, celebrating his (assumed) victory. Neace gets angry and goes after Corassani, but is held back by his coaches. Bisping yells that Miller needs to control his team. Um, Bisping? Remove the plank from your own eye, n'amsayin?
Keith Kizer, the head of the Nevada Athletic Commission, saw enough. He heads into the cage to tell Corassani that if he keeps it up, he will be suspended. Once every is settled down, Corassani's win is announced.
Team Bisping goes to the parking lot to celebrate and watch Miller's car get towed. What did I say about karma?

Starting with its Feb. 4 card, the UFC is introducing another cool innovation with fight cards shown in 3D in movie theatres around the country. The promotion is partnering with Cinedigm Digital Cinema to bring events to the big screen. There will be four 3D shows per year.
"By partnering with Cinedigm, we're taking the UFC viewing experience to a whole new level. For the first time ever, fight fans can watch a UFC Pay-Per-View card in 3D at theaters across the country. We want UFC fans to have the best viewing experience possible and now they get a chance to experience major UFC Pay-Per-Views in 3D," said UFC president Dana White.
In the past, Cinedigm has produced 3D shows and sporting events like the Foo Fighters, FIFA World Cup, BCS Championship and the Dave Matthews Band.

Thoughts on the match:
It was always going to be a tough task with the two days of rest, but I thought the guys pushed through it. I went with a lot of guys who played minutes. I could?ve changed it up but I wanted to push them, and they responded.

There is a thief in Glendale, Ariz., who should consider himself quite lucky. He robbed UFC lightweight contender Benson Henderson's home and managed to make it out before "Smooth" returned home.
Henderson tweeted that his place was rummaged through. The thief took many of his DVDs and his XBox 360, but left behind Henderson's new 44-inch television. Henderson was shaken up at first, but then thankful that the damage wasn't worse.
Shouldn't the thief be the one who is thankful? Breaking into anyone's home is a bad idea, but it's an especially bad idea to break into the home of a man who is paid to beat people up, and who has a degree in criminology. The thief should be truly appreciative that Henderson did not catch him in the act.
Henderson is currently training to fight Clay Guida on the UFC on Fox card in November. Come to think of it, what was Guida doing at the time of the crime?
