There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

Recently retired fighter Chris Lytle hinted at a future in politics while still in his fighting career. Now that he has given up fighting and is just a firefighter and the father of four children, Lytle has decided to fill up his scads of free time by running for the Indiana State Senate.

Lytle is well-known of one of MMA's good guys, always ready to share his time with a fan or a member of the media. Over the course of his 11-year career, he continued to serve as a firefighter. In the cage, he was the kind of fighter fans always wanted to watch because he was always willing to put on a good show, winning 10 fight night bonuses from the UFC.

Now, Lytle wants to put those qualities to work in the state government. He has already started campaigning, visiting future constituents all over the 28th district and using the tagline, "Fighting for Indiana's Future." Though it's been more than a month since his retirement bout, a submission of Dan Hardy, Lytle is sporting a black eye in many of his pictures. He probably had a fun time explaining that to the people at the senior citizen's center.

UFC on Versus 6?s Charlie Brenneman hopes to continue his remarkable year

A lot has changed since June 22nd for Charlie Brenneman.

That was the day that TJ Grant withdrew from their matchup at UFC on Versus 4 card. That meant no fight, a fight in which Brenneman would be fighting in front of his hometown crowd.

But it did not take long for the tides to turn for Brenneman. As he puts it, ?I felt fate was on my side.?

Read all about Brenneman and his amazing ascent to the top of the welterweight division, as Brenneman spoke with MMAFrenzy.com regarding this and his upcoming bout with Anthony Johnson.

Indian GP tax issue still a concern

Formula 1 teams and drivers have still not resolved all the issues relating to tax at the Indian Grand Prix, despite recent assurances that the matter was being sorted. Talks have taken place over the past few weeks to allay fears that the sport's competitors could be hit by large tax bills for racing in India - and there was even talk that the situation could go as far as forcing a boycott of the event. Earlier this month, race organisers Jaypee Sports International (JPSI) offered to pay any customs duties and taxes if required ? although this has still not sorted the situation.

Jones adds to trophy case, finishes ?Rampage? in fourth

Jones adds to trophy case, finishes ?Rampage? in fourthThe light heavyweight division should be extremely scared.

Jon Jones is still learning on the job, yet he's putting the division to shame. Jones schooled Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in every area of the game and finished the former champ via rear-naked choke at the 1:14 mark of the fourth round in the main event of UFC 135 in Denver.

This was Jones' first defense of the UFC light heavyweight title, a belt he won back in March by destroying another highly accomplished veteran in Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

The 24-year-old Jones (14-1, 8-1 UFC - only loss via disqualification) has barely been threatened in nine UFC fights. Keep in mind, Jones started his MMA career just three and half years ago. His control of the fight Saturday night was awe-inspiring.

The veteran Jackson (32-9, 7-3 UFC) is still a very good fighter, but he never found a way to ward off the versatile attack coming from Jones.

"The goal was to prove we can strike with Quinton Jackson," Jones said. "He kind of insulted me saying I have no punching power. So my trainer Mike Winkeljohn cleaned up my striking to prove a point."

During the lead up to the fight, Jackson said Jones was all hype. After three-plus rounds of absorbing dozens of nasty kicks, punches and elbows as well as fighting off takedowns, mark down Jackson as a believer.

"I'm in the best shape of my life. I expected to be able to close the distance. I couldn't do it," Jackson said. "He's great guys. I thought it was hype. The kid is good. I have to take my hat off to him."

[Related: Phenom Jones outclasses Jackson at UFC 135]

Jones adds to trophy case, finishes ?Rampage? in fourth

When Jones references his striking, he's talking about his hands, which are still a work in progress. But there's no denying his kicking game is as dangerous as anyone who's ever stepped into a cage.

Over the first 15 minutes, Jones brutalized Rampage's lead leg with kicks to the inside and outside. By the fourth round, Jackson was limping badly.

In the opening seconds of the round, Jones showed off some of that improvement with his boxing by landing a left hook that hurt Jackson. The 33-year-old backed up to the cage and Jones took him down. Rampage was sitting up against the cage when Jones delivered a big knee to his chest. It had to knock the wind out of Jackson because he slumped to his side. He was there for the taking.

Jones worked him to his back and rolled it over. He slapped on a choke and Jackson tapped six seconds later.

"Before the fourth round, my corner felt he was starting to break a little bit, so we came out and finished the fight," said Jones.

[Related: After yet another thorough win, can anybody stop Jon Jones?]

Jones' kicks really set things up over the course of the first three rounds, but Jackson was quick to point out the champion's wrestling pedigree also made him hesitant to attack.

"Jon is a great wrestler so you don't want to take too many chances. Jon keeps his fingers in your face so it's hard to get close to him," Jackson said of Jones, who possesses an incredible 84-inch reach. "Jon is good. I'm telling you, the kid's here to stay. I don't know ... whoever he fights next, I don't know who's going to beat him. He had me mesmerized."

Jones adds to trophy case, finishes ?Rampage? in fourth

Up next is Jones' former training partner Rashad Evans. Evans, also a former UFC 205-pound champion, had a bitter split with Jones and their gym in Albuquerque, NM. earlier this year. The trash talking between the two has been going on for the better part of nine months. It should make for a dynamite promotion.

The fight itself? Like Rampage said, who knows? If Jones keep improving and adding to his arsenal with each fight, the guy who'll eventually beat him may be in junior high school right now.

Ellenberger quickly KOs Shields in UFN 25 main event

Ellenberger quickly KOs Shields in UFN 25 main event

Jake Ellenberger notched a quick win over Jake Shields in the main event of Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans on Saturday.

Shields twice attempted takedowns to start the fight, but Ellenberger shook them both off. Shields clinched with Ellenberger, who then delivered a knee to the body and another to the head. The knee to the head knocked Shields to the ground. Ellenberger jumped on top and threw several hammerfists until the fight was stopped at 0:53 of the first round. Shields appeared to be disoriented as he tried to continue the fight against referee Kevin Mulhall.

Ellenberger was elated about his performance.

"I was just trying to keep the pressure on him, and I came away with the W," said Ellenberger, who pocketed a $55,000 knockout of the night bonus for his efforts.

Though it was a tough loss, just walking into the cage was a win for Shields. Three weeks ago, his father -- who also served as Shields' manager and cornerman during fights -- passed away. Shields said before the fight that his father would have wanted him to fight, but that doesn't mean actually fighting was easy for him. He was not happy with the stoppage.

"I feel frustrated. I went down with a good hit. I wanted to keep fighting, but the ref thought it was time to stop it," Shields said.

For Ellenberger, this convincing victory catapults him into the UFC welterweight title picture. He has five wins in a row, with four of those wins coming by a stoppage. He is known to be a finisher, and he showed that off tonight.

Shields, the one-time Strikeforce middleweight champion, lost in his last bout, a title shot against Georges St. Pierre. This loss puts him at 0-2 on the year.

Anthony Johnson is trying to turn the corner with his new camp

Anthony Johnson is trying to turn the corner with his new camp

Anthony Johnson has always been guy with a massive potential, but between weight cutting issues and the lack of a well-rounded game, he hasn't been able to breakthrough. Now might be the time to keep an eye on the 27-year-old.

We get our first look at the revitalized Johnson (9-3, 6-3 UFC) this Saturday against Charlie Brenneman on the UFC on Versus 6 card in Washington, D.C.

Johnson picked up new management early in 2011 and then made the wise move of joining what appears to be the next elite camp on the horizon - Imperial Athletics.

The south Florida camp was started by a crew of Brazilians who were unhappy with their old team American Top team. Now with an infusion of American fighters, including Johnson, Imperial is helping to shore up the weakness of various fighters.

For Johnson it means gaining more respect for takedown defense and his jiu-jitsu game.

"At one point, I can't lie, I couldn't stand jiu-jitsu. I did it, but if you don't have a passion for something, you're not going to be good at it. Now my passion for jiu-jitsu is picking up, so now my jiu-jitsu game is improving a lot," Johnson said. "It's all about if you want to be good or if you don't. If you want to be an average fighter or an average person in life, that's what you're going to be. I don't want to be labeled as a one-dimensional fighter."

He gets to work on his ground game with black belts like Jorge Santiago and Danillo Villefort. Fellow African-Americans Rashad Evans and Michael Johnson also train at Imperial and have now come to call themselves "The Blackzilians."

Johnson is becoming a smarter fighter. He heard a rash of crap from the fans in Oakland for his measured attack in a win over Dan Hardy at UFC 117. He doesn't care if it leads to wins.

"I don't give a [expletive] what anybody has to say about how I fight, because at the end of the day, they're either going to watch me or they aren't. They're either going to love me or they're going to hate me, so I'm going to continue to be me," said Johnson. "If I say I'm going to punch you in the eye, I might not punch you in the eye; I might kick you in your leg, you know what I mean? I'm going to always do the unexpected."

Johnson saw the light around one his most heated fights. He and Josh Koscheck went at it during the prefight lead up to their bout at UFC 106. Koscheck took him down, controlled him on the ground and mocked him throughout the fight. As a result, something clicked with Johnson.

"I learned a lesson from the Koscheck fight. Don't fall into the hype; that's what you don't do. You don't believe everything somebody says they're going to do. That's what makes you a mixed martial artist? being prepared in every aspect of the game."

Now Johnson is taking a respectful approach to Brenneman.

"Charlie has a good chin, a good style of fighting. I actually really like his style; he has a nice little swagger when it comes down to fighting, and he puts it together really well. I don't have any doubts in Charlie at all. I think he can do anything he wants to do, but when he's fighting somebody like me, it's going to be a lot tougher," said Johnson.\

Brenneman is a great test for Johnson. He's a relentless takedown artist. If Johnson's takedown defense isn't up to snuff he'll lose a decision.

UFC allows questionable music choices at UFN 25

UFC allows questionable music choices at UFN 25One of the fun parts of a live UFC event is the way fighters use music to pump up as they walk out to the Octagon, but two fighters made questionable choices in their walkout songs at Ultimate Fight Night 25. Those bad decisions were then repeated by UFC president Dana White, who approves every song that is used by fighters.

Ken Stone, who won via submission, walked out to the Prodigy song, "Smack My Bitch Up." The song repeats two lines, "Smack my bitch up, change my pitch up." When it was released in 1997, it was protested by women's groups as condoning violence towards women. MTV only allowed the song to be played late at night, and Wal-Mart and K-Mart pulled the CD from its stores. Prodigy released a statement that the song was not about violence, but that's not apparent from its lyrics.

The next bad decision was when Matt Riddle walked out to the Scorpions song, "Rock You Like a Hurricane." In most cities, it's the perfect song to walk out to, but these fights took place in New Orleans. That's a city that was literally rocked by a hurricane in 2005. Hurricane Katrina's effects are still being felt in New Orleans, as they struggle to restore their population and status as a tourist destination to pre-Katrina levels.

The UFC generally controls their brand very tightly, and UFC officials confirmed to Cagewriter that White approves every walkout song. He has vetoed songs in the past. It's surprising that the UFC would let these two songs slip through.

UFC fighters make the late night rounds

When the UFC announced their deal to air fights on Fox, Dana White was asked if this means that MMA is now mainstream. He answered that they weren't yet, but that they were getting the opportunity to become mainstream.

White may not think that the UFC is there yet, but an indicator that the UFC is becoming a household name is that three fighters are showing their faces on network late-night shows. First, Jason "Mayhem" Miller appeared on Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night to talk about the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Next, both main eventers from UFC 135 will appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Monday night. Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and former champ Quinton Jackson are scheduled to sit with Kimmel together.

In the build-up to their fight, they've already had several, public squabbles which reached a head when Jackson accused Jones of planting a spy in Jackson's camp. Jones denied the allegations, but their animosity should make for interesting television.

For years, the UFC and their fighters would make advertisers run, so late night talk show hosts were loathe to book fighters. Now, in the course of a week, three are on network television.

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 135 walkout shirts

Quinton Jackson will try to take the UFC light heavyweight belt from Jon Jones this Saturday in Denver, and we finally have the answer to the most important question. What will they wear to the Octagon?

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 135 walkout shirts

Both fighters have taken into account the changing seasons, which is kind. Among the four choices for Jackson's walkout goods is this long sleeve shirt by MMA Elite, which wins points for being bright and shiny, but is a tad busy. Jones' Form Athletics sweatshirt is made of nice, warm fleece that's perfect for a fall day. The Jackson shirt is $37.99, while Jones' sweatshirt is $65.

Based solely on sartorial factors, who wins the fight? Jackson, as I'm a sucker for anything shiny. You can see my actual fight picks, as well as the rest of the Yahoo! Sports MMA staff, right here.

Hamilton faces race strategy dilemma

Lewis Hamilton must brace himself for a harder tyre strategy call in the Singapore Grand Prix after a push by his McLaren team to get a replacement super soft for the one he punctured in qualifying was rejected by the FIA. The McLaren driver punctured his right rear tyre during a run right at the end of Q2 - with it being suspected that the damage was caused when he ran over debris following Kamui Kobayashi's accident at the chicane. With drivers likely to need to call on all their sets of the super softs in the Singapore Grand Prix, the loss of that set could prove costly to Hamilton's chances of overhauling Red Bull Racing duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber and his own team-mate Jenson Button, who start ahead of him on the grid

?Grand Slam? Puts Luis in Reach of iNGPS Title

In a dominant online racing performance, Hugo Luis powered his way to the chequered flag at the Okayama International Circuit to make it four wins in a row, and further extend his lead in the iRacing.com NVIDIA Grand Prix Series with just two races remaining. Coupled with his success at Sebring earlier in the season, the My3id pilot has now secured five victories in the World Championship and is just a few steps away from taking the accolades of being the globe’s top online road racer and the accompanying cash prize of $10,500. Luis, who started the 83 lap race in second position, got away from the line ahead of pole-sitter Klaus Kiveks to pull alongside his team-mate at the opening corner, and subsequently take the lead as the pair [...]

B.J. Penn doesn?t want to make it personal against Nick Diaz

In last week's UFC 137 switcheroo, B.J. Penn ended up facing Nick Diaz instead of Carlos Condit. Because of that, the producers of "Countdown," the show that airs to hype up UFC cards, had to work with Penn again to make the show suitable for the new line-up.

Penn says that the UFC asked him to say Diaz's name and "I'm going to beat Nick Diaz," something Penn found a problem with.

A few things to mention here:

1. Countdown's role is to hype up fights. Of course they want Penn to say something about his opponent. That will help sell pay-per-views, which is a good goal for everyone, right?

2. Penn has threatened to lick blood off his opponents. He has trash-talked before every fight, except for when he fought his friend Matt Hughes. Now he's worried about saying, "I'm going to beat Nick Diaz?" C'mon, son.

3. He says that he is worried that Diaz will be edited to look like a bad guy. Really, B.J.? This video was not edited, and Diaz still didn't come out looking that hot.

If Penn doesn't want to talk trash, that's fine. But that's not what he was asked to do. He was asked to say he was going to win the fight. Is that really all that bad?

Vettel on brink of title after victory

Sebastian Vettel moved to the brink of a second title by winning the Singapore Grand Prix, but Jenson Button's runner-up finish meant the German was one point shy of the championship lead he required to wrap things up for 2011. Vettel utterly dominated the majority of the race. The Red Bull man was a second per lap faster than his pursuers at first, and though the pack closed up with a mid-race safety car after Michael Schumacher clipped Sergio Perez and was launched into a violent accident - from which he emerged unhurt - Vettel had a cushion of backmarkers behind him at the restart and was eight seconds clear again after just one lap.

Dunham and Rocha notch UFN 25 wins

Dunham and Rocha notch UFN 25 wins

One fighter got back on the right track while another earned his first UFC win as the preliminary card concluded at Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans on Saturday night.

Dunham outclasses Bailey

Shamar Bailey showed tremendous heart in a decision loss to Evan Dunham. Dunham showed strong striking early, as he used short punches to control Bailey early in the first round. Bailey responded, showing striking that has improved from his time on "The Ultimate Fighter." Bailey then ended the round with a takedown. Dunham threw a strike after the horn sounded to end the round, but it was inadvertent. Dunham was not penalized.

In the second, Dunham continued to favor a left-right combo that befuddled Bailey. Dunham peppered in kicks in between throwing punches and stuffing takedowns. Bailey continued to withstand Dunham's shots in the third, but he didn't create enough offense to win the round. As the fight neared its end, Dunham teed off, throwing a bevy of kicks and punches but still couldn't knock Bailey down. Bailey continued to move forward and push for a takedown. Dunham won the fight 30-27 on all three cards.

Rocha's jiu-jitsu catches McKenzie

Though Cody McKenzie is known for his guillotine, he fell to Vagner Rocha on a rear naked choke submission. McKenzie lampooned Rocha early in the round, motioning for Rocha to come in and fight. When Rocha attempted a takedown, McKenzie tried to use his signature guillotine to stop the fight, but it didn't work. Rocha used his position to try for a Kimura. He couldn't finish, but he held onto McKenzie to move into a rear naked choke. Again, McKenzie got out and worked his way back to his feet before the round ended.

In the second, McKenzie showed great defense to nearly every submission attempt Rocha threw at him, but didn't have the same good fortune as Rocha took full mount with less than two minutes in the round. McKenzie turned to get away from Rocha's strikes, but gave up his back. Rocha applied a textbook rear naked choke, and McKenzie was forced to tap at 3:49 in the second round.

The sim racers convened at Lime Rock Park for the first of two rounds this season, utilizing the circuit?s full layout. Te Huna and Mizugaki open UFC 135 with vicious knockouts

Te Huna and Mizugaki open UFC 135 with vicious knockoutsRicardo Romero wanted no part of James Te Huna on the feet. In just 47 seconds of UFC 135 openers, we saw exactly why.

Romero, caught in a bad position on his hands and knees, got whacked by several big rights and was knocked silly. Te Huna got a KO win at the 0:47 mark of the first round in Denver, Co.

Romero's plan was fine, but his execution was awful.

Seven seconds into the fight, he shot for a takedown in sloppy fashion. Romero tried a few more times from long distance. He was telegraphing the attempts, so Te Huna simply stepped back, used Romero's head as target practice landing uppercuts and short rights.

An uppercut rocked Romero and a little right hook dropped him. The American scrambled and pushed forward, but Te Huna simply backed up. With his opponent on his hands and knees, two more Te Huna rights landed and Romero went limp.

The referee Tim Mills probably jumped in to save Romero one shot too late. When he rolled Romero over, the fighter starting babbling and moaning. He had no clue what had happened.

"Just relax brother," Mills said several times. "Everything's going to be okay. Calm down."

Te Huna (15-5) was thrilled to get the victory so quickly. He explained that he'd dislocated a finger on his left hand a few weeks back, so he was facing using the right hand the majority of the night.

Mizugaki swarms Escovedo to get bounce back win

This was a different Takeya Mizugaki tonight in Denver. The Japanese striking specialist lacked aggression with his attack in his last fight against Brian Bowles. Cole Escovedo was the recipient of Mizugaki's pent up frustration. Mizugaki battered the American on the feet before scoring a TKO finish at 4:30 of the second round.

Mizugaki (15-6, 2-1 UFC, ) once challeged Miguel Torres for the WEC 135-pound title, but he's been less aggressive in recent fights.

He changed that tonight by closing space early. Escovedo (17-8, 0-2 UFC) had a height and reach advantage, but was never allowed to get comfortable. In close quarters, Mizugaki consistently found a home for his left hook. Escovedo tried to slow things down by grabbing Mizugaki around the neck with a Thai clinch. Mizugaki adjusted and crushed Escovedo with uppercuts and short elbows.

Mizugaki also broke down Escovedo with some excellent lefts to the body. With 2:30 minutes left in the second, he landed a bomb to Escovedo's side and that started the slide. Escovedo eventually got trapped along the cage and dropped two times by left hooks. The second time he was on his back, he was through and Mizugaki sealed things with a nasty right cross that left Escovedo dazed.

Assuncao wins slow-paced fight with strong third round

During yesterday's weigh-in, it was evident that Junior Assuncao was fired up to return to the Octagon for the first time since 2007, but it took a while on fight night for him to get going. Once he did, Assuncao crushed Eddie Yagin on the ground in the final round to take a unanimous decision, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-27, in the final Facebook fight on the UFC 135 undercard.

Assuncao said he wasn't nervous, but something didn't click until the middle of the fight. He did admit he was trying to wear down Yagin and eliminate the possibility of getting caught on the feet.

The Brazilian was extremely dominant in the final round. His experience showed during a guillotine predicament. Assuncao warded off the danger and dumped Yagin on his back with 3:35 left in the fight. Yagin never got back to his feet.

Assuncao mixed up elbows, hammer fists and punches to Yagin's head and body. Two judges gave him a 10-8 round.

Koscheck talks exploding eyeball and asking for Wandy, Franklin or Leben

Koscheck talks exploding eyeball and asking for Wandy, Franklin or LebenJosh Koscheck wouldn't be Josh Koscheck if he didn't dole out some great prefight talk in advance of his UFC 135 fight against Matt Hughes. The welterweight title contender has been on the shelf since his loss to GeorgesSt-Pierre last December so he's got plenty to say. It started last week on Twitter when he essentially dared Hughes to not take the fight.

In a blog this week for Sportsnet.ca, Koscheck apologized for his one-sided loss to GSP. St-Pierre smashed Kos' orbital bone in the first minute of the fight at UFC 124. The American said the pain was off the charts.

"I had no depth perception and was basically a one-eyed fighter for the next 23 minutes. I can man up but the pain was just horrible. It hurt worse than anything I've ever experienced," wrote Koscheck. "It hurt even more than when I cut my big toe off when I was six -- when I was playing with my grandfather's axe being a little [expletive]. Seriously -- the eye hurt way worse than chopping my big toe off."

Koscheck is thrilled that he got a shot atHughes after Diego Sanchez had to bail from the fight with an injury.

"[...]last week I got word Matt Hughes, who has avoided me for years, needed an opponent for UFC 135 in Denver on Sept. 24. I've called out Hughes for so long but he's always avoided me. When he was on top and one of the top in the division, he used his position to avoid fighting me and all the AKA guys," Koscheck said. "[...] Like I knew he would, he tried to suggest fighting Jon Fitch instead, knowing full well Fitch is still recovering from shoulder surgery. I tweeted that I'd accepted the fight and was ready, just to put pressure on Hughes to quit bitching and take the fight. I wanted to make it so that if he did turn the fight down, all the fans would know that he bitched out."

So Koscheck is staying at 170 after toying with the idea of taking a fight at middleweight. He says he asked for Wanderlei Silva, Chris Leben or Rich Franklin.
